SPCA Wake Surgeon- Saving Lives Spay

Job Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday
Position Overview & Responsibilities:
As a surgeon you are responsible for the daily care of all surgical patients, ensuring all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri-, and postoperative care of patients handling and monitoring our surgical patients from prep through recovery. The surgeon is also responsible for training participants in all aspects of patient care and efficient/safe clinic practices, maintaining a professional and kind manner at all times. Works closely with VP of Operations, other veterinarians, medical staff, and other staff at SPCA Wake.
Other responsibilities include:
- Examine animals preoperatively to determine their ability to withstand surgery
- Perform surgical sterilizations
- Examine animals postoperatively to ensure appropriate recovery
- Practice, train, and support the use of Fear Free handling at all times
- Vaccinate and snap test animals
- Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by Veterinary Technical Assistants
- Creatively problem solve on a daily basis
- Make reasonable and sensible medical decisions
- Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols
- Communicate effectively with the VP of Operations in order to keep them apprised of necessary situations, concerns about staff, or concerns about training
- Provide input and communicate any issues regarding the clinic’s disease control protocols, surgical protocols, or other medical issues at regular operations meetings and/or weekly meetings with VP of Operations as appropriate
- Behaves in a manner that upholds both professional and personal standards while embracing the core values of SPCA Wake at all times
- Strive to continuously update and improve all training needs

Requirements:
- Must be a licensed veterinarian in the state of North Carolina
- Must maintain all current and correct licensure
- Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help
- Must be able to see fine detail in a variety of situations
- Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly
- Must have good hearing including ability to distinguish changes in pitch
- Must have reasonable degree of agility to move through tightly cramped areas in various situations
- Must have acceptable sense of touch and smell
- Must have good range of motion in joints and back for twisting, etc.
- Much have acceptable sense of balance and be able to work and reach on hands and knees
- Must possess excellent hand-eye coordination and possess an acceptable degree of dexterity in hands and fingers
- Must have good vision including peripheral vision, fine detail, distance, depth perception, and the ability to focus
- Must be able to work efficiently under stressful conditions
- Must be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations
- Must be able to cope with death due to surgical complications or euthanasia
- Ability to rapidly and accurately process information
- Ability to delegate tasks and recognize a need for assistance and ask for help
- Ability to make decisions
- Ability to remain calm in frustrating situations
Potential and Prolonged Exposures:
- Various aqueous solutions including, but not limited to, dish soap and chlorhexidine
- Isopropanol and hydrogen peroxide
- Formalin solution
- Isoflurane gas
- Ammonium cleaners, bleach, and Accel
- Pressurized steam
- Sharps, including needles and surgical blades
