Azimuth Corporation is seeking an Electro-Optic & Nonlinear Optic Research Scientist to join the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, OH team. The ideal candidate will support R&D efforts in the Photonic Materials Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at WPAFB, focused on the development and characterization of solid-state materials to be used in devices for the control of light propagation by means of linear and nonlinear effects. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of materials scientists, physicists, and engineers working to develop the next generation of optical components and devices in support of the Air Force mission.
Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Characterization of the optical properties of solid-state materials
  • Setup of laser-based experiments for testing materials and devices
  • Processing of specimens to make them suitable for optical characterization
  • Analysis and interpretation of experimental results in the context of the state-of-the-art in the field
  • Preparation of reports and presentations describing plans, progress, and accomplishments for internal and external use

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph. D. in Physics, Materials Science, Optical Sciences, Chemistry, or closely related science or engineering field.
  • 0-3 year of research experience after Ph. D.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills across team and individual contributor settings
  • Experience with experimental optical characterization of solid-state materials (e.g., visible spectroscopy, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, etc).
  • Experience with the use of lasers with emission in the visible or IR ranges.
  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or experience presenting oral contributions or posters in scientific conferences.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Active Security Clearance (U.S. citizenship required)

Desired Qualifications

  • Dissertation topic or subsequent research experience in some of the following areas: materials science, spectroscopy, photonics, linear and nonlinear optics, applied physics, crystal growth and characterization.
  • Ability to design, set-up, test, and run customized laser-based optical experiments for the characterization of materials and devices.
  • Experience with polarization and temperature dependent measurements of linear and nonlinear optical properties of materials.
  • Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, Origin, and associated scripting languages.
  • Being-self-motivated, having a high sense of scientific integrity, and being cognizant and respectful of everyone’s role in the team.
  • Agile problem solving skills.

Physical Requirements / Travel

  • Must be able to work in an office environment at a desk and computer.
  • May travel ~10% to conferences, program reviews, industry meetings, or other collaborative events. Most or all travel would be CONUS.
