Responsible for managing the selection and utilization of pharmaceuticals and supports core clinical programs such as M-Care and formulary management. The Clinical Pharmacist is responsible for developing and administering best-in-class clinical programs to improve the quality of service, as well as contribute to the continuous improvement of clinical programs related to medication adherence.

How you will make an impact:

  • Medication Compounding (topical creams, oral medications, liquid medications, injectables, suppositories, nasal sprays, transdermal gels/patches, troches/lozenges, inhalation solutions, sublingual/buccal medications).
  • Lead Medicaid formulary management processes
  • Provides effective and efficient communication of pharmacotherapy issues.
  • Conducts outreach to members to identify and overcome barriers to medication adherence
  • Responsible for all member, stakeholder and provider notifications regarding formulary changes
  • Ensure appropriate formulary set-up and claims adjudication
  • Participates in clinical and operational process improvement discussions for adherence programs
  • Develops, implements and continually updates physician and patient educational materials
  • Serve as a clinical pharmacy resource to pharmacy benefit management

Key responsibilities:


  1. Medication Compounding: Prepare and compound medications in various forms, including oral, topical, injectable, and ore, based on physician prescriptions and patient needs.
  2. Compliance and Regulation: Ensure the pharmacy complies with all federal and state laws and regulations governing pharmacy practices. This includes maintaining records, handling controlled substances, and adhering to licensing requirements.
  3. Staff Supervision: Manage and supervise pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other personnel. This involves scheduling, training, and ensuring staff competency.
  4. Operational Oversight: Oversee daily operations of the pharmacy, including inventory management, ordering medications and supplies, and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
  5. Patient Care and Counseling: Ensure that patients receive quality pharmaceutical care and counseling. This may involve consulting with patients on medication usage, potential side effects, and drug interactions.
  6. Quality Assurance: Implement and monitor quality assurance programs to ensure accuracy and safety in dispensing medications. This includes reviewing prescriptions, checking for drug interactions, and verifying proper labeling and packaging.
  7. Communication: Maintain effective communication with healthcare providers, patients, and other stakeholders. This includes addressing patient inquiries, collaborating with physicians on medication therapy management, and handling any complaints or issues.
  8. Financial Management: Oversee financial aspects of the pharmacy, such as billing, insurance claims processing, and monitoring profitability. Ensure accurate pricing and billing practices.
  9. Continuous Improvement: Implement strategies for continuous improvement in pharmacy operations, patient care, and staff performance. Stay updated on developments in pharmacy practice and regulatory changes.
  10. Emergency Preparedness: Develop and maintain plans for handling emergencies or disasters that may affect pharmacy operations or patient care.
  11. Ethical Standards: Uphold high ethical standards in pharmacy practice, ensuring patient confidentiality, professionalism, and adherence to the pharmacy's code of conduct.
  12. Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of pharmacy operations, including prescriptions filled, inventory logs, and regulatory documentation.
  13. Training and Development: Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for pharmacy staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree or Doctorate in Pharmacy. Current unrestricted Pharmacy License required, MI Pharmacy License required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of managed care pharmacy (PBM) experience or residency in lieu of work experience; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background
  • Must possess an active unrestricted state license to practice pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacist

Preferred Skills, Capabilities and Experiences:

  • PharmD required.
  • Formulary management experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, problem-solving skills, facilitation skills, and analytical skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
