NATURE OF WORK: This position is an entry-level position in the Nisqually Corrections system. The officer, under general supervision, supervises the inmates of the Nisqually Detention facility. Incumbent also dispatches Law Enforcement Officers. Must be able to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives, searches, books, and fingerprints and photographs incoming prisoners.
Issues jail uniforms, records and stores personal effects and houses inmates by appropriate classification.
Maintains jail security by observation of inmates, pat searches, strip searches, and cell searches.
Assures that inmates have access to basic needs for hygiene and welfare.
Prepares and delivers prisoners to and from court, doctor's office, hospitals, and other locations.
Release prisoners by established procedures.
Logs court disposition of cases.
Writes reports and maintains files.
Screens and processes visitors.
Process personal property brought to inmates and released.
Assigns and directs work of trustees.
Distributes meals to all inmates, assuring that all materials are removed from cells after meals.
Advises supervisor when medical attention appears necessary and maintains physical safety of prisoners.
Administers prescribed medications.
Monitors video and audio surveillance equipment and other job related equipment.
Receives incoming communications and relays them to the appropriate office or department using prescribed radio procedures.
Attends training and shift meetings.
Responds to and assists with major and minor disturbances, medical crisis situations, escapes, fire, and other natural disasters.
Prepares reports, memos, logbook entries, and unit rosters though handwritten, typed and computer terminal entries.
Other duties as necessary.

Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, to recognize actual and potential dangers and to determine proper course of action.
Ability to read and understand laws, ordinances, rules and regulation.
Ability to cope with stressful situations firmly, tactfully, and with respect to individual rights.
Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
Ability to adjust to rotating work schedules.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED equivalent
U.S. Citizen
Must be 18 years of age
Must have a valid Washington State Drivers License
Must pass a Nisqually Police Department certified dispatch training session.
Must have a current certification from a Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center Corrections Academy or a current certification from a BIA Corrections Training course.
Have no felony convictions or series of offences of minor nature which would lend them to establish a pattern of criminal behavior, or any criminal instances concerning moral turpitude.
Must have an acceptable score on an examination based on knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must pass a background investigation by the Nisqually Police Department, as well as an oral interview and psychological examination.
Must meet the current physical standards adopted by the Nisqually Police Department.
Must qualify for the Nisqually Indian Tribe's Vehicle insurance.
