About the Position:
The primary role of the General Manager is to provide vision and strategic leadership directed to maximize the value, cache and long-term sustainability of the brand.
This position will be responsible for monitoring the financial health of the brand, improving existing and future operations, systems, and processes. The General Manager will be a key driver of initiatives and all sales channels. The role will manage multiple high visibility priorities and is expected to advise the team on ways to improve the brand, help save capital and how capital should be deployed.
Additionally, the General Manager will need to be able to prepare monthly reports and is expected to create and execute presentations. The expectation of this position is to make decisions alongside ownership and within the guidelines of an entrepreneurial organization.

The position is located in Napa Valley, CA.
Reporting Relationships:
The General Manager reports to the Owner.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Working with the Ownership to create forward thinking business strategy and plans.
- Managing the company to ensure the highest standards of quality are implemented and maintained across all areas, including wine quality, operations and customer service
- Leading the organization through transition to achieve profitable results.
- Building organization competence and capability.
- Creating and nurturing a positive company culture.
- Monitoring, measuring and reporting on company performance
- Implementing organizational changes as needed to achieve strategy and goals.
- Deep industry knowledge and connections across all aspects - wholesale, direct sales, hospitality, etc.
- Strong organizational and people management skills to provide structure and leadership to team.
- Excellent business acumen with the ability to understand financials, operations, and drive growth initiatives.
- Help establish and implement, according the winery owner, overall strategy of the company to encompass all functional business areas, including all channels of sales, marketing, hospitality and compliance.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with course work in business administration or closely related field, MBA is a plus.
- Candidates will be evaluated on their track record in increasingly responsible leadership positions, wine industry knowledge, experience and familiarity with how all aspects of the business contribute to sustained business success. Professional experience ideally includes:
- Experience must include (5+) years of winery operations and responsibility for managing a team of eight or more people.
- Executive leadership with general management, sales, marketing and operations responsibility.
- Experience with winery of comparable size, quality and complexity with demonstrated ability to build a trusting relationship and gain the confidence of business owners.
- Experience building a luxury wine brand; Ideally in-depth experience with Bordeaux varietals
- Understanding and experience leading winemaking and vineyard teams.
- A proven record for building and executing short and long term strategic and financial business plans with expertise working collaboratively with Boards.
- A track record of successfully growing a brand and, or, turning around a brand.
- Broad experience and demonstrated results growing profitable, direct sales channels through diverse direct marketing strategies.
- P&L responsibility with demonstrated operational savvy and strong bottom-line orientation.
- Verifiable success in brand positioning with a demonstrated understanding of current
- competition, competitive climate and emerging market trends.
- Successful relationships with key distributors in key markets with experience reviewing and realigning distribution when necessary.
- Demonstrated ability to deal persuasively with key customers and vendors.
- Experience with a team and brand whose wines are receiving outstanding scores from critical audiences.
The General Manager will develop and present operational, production and sales and marketing strategies to the Ownership. Once approved, it is the General Managers responsibility to.
- Refine and execute these strategies to achieve targeted growth, revenue, profitability, and quality objectives and to develop risk mitigation scenarios.
- Lead the team in successfully executing against plans and goals to meet or exceed current financial and non-financial performance targets for the business.
- Build team skills and strengths, establish sound business performance systems to ensure accountability, manage risk, and drive execution.
- Ensure proper staffing to maximize, productivity, profitability and quality.
- Review and refine sales and marketing plans - Identify and advance key account/trade and distributor relationships.
- Build and deliver direct-to-consumer programs, including tour and tasting venues focused on driving revenues through this channel and establishing wine club or preferred list.
- Build and deliver a wine line-item rationalization plan that strengthens positioning and supports margin growth.
- Review the operation, evaluating and measuring operational efficiency and implementing necessary changes where appropriate.
- Represent the business to the outside world, building relationships in all directions.
- Identify new market and product opportunities cognizant of market, competitive and economic conditions, governmental legislation and regulations impacting the business.
Sales & Marketing
- Create increased and sustainable growth in top and bottom-line revenues while increasing growth in asset value.
- Manage the development of all sales in channels both retail (DTC) and wholesale on premise channels.
- Meet frequently with winery owner to ensure that operations are being executed in accordance with the organization's policies. Working collaboratively with the accounting team to provide financial information along with related recommendations to enable the business to prosper.
- Establish current and long-range goals, objectives, plans and policies, subject to approval by the winery owner.
- Proactively direct the creation of all e-commerce/e-campaign materials and distribution including new wine releases events, special activities and offerings.
- Oversee all copywriting for digital and print material making certain of consistency and the appropriate style and tone exist.
- Proactively manage the planning, design, production and distribution of all print material ensuring the highest quality and controlling expenses.
- Build support and excitement amongst peers and staff of Sales and Marketing related initiatives.
- Review operating results of the organization, compare them to established objectives, and take steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to correct unsatisfactory results.
Brand Development:
- Lead and encourage brainstorming with team, Work to help translate that thinking into beautiful pitch decks, and deliver best-in-class brand creative that exceeds internal objectives
