Overview:
East Tennessee R&D facility is seeking qualified applicants for a Linux Systems Engineer position in the Research and Development Systems Engineering group. The R&D Systems Engineering group exists to facilitate site goals through systems engineering, integration, and support for the research community. We run clusters, servers, workstations, and other services where science happens at the lab. The Linux Systems Engineer is responsible for facilitating R&D projects. This position will work with a team to provide Linux Systems deployment, automation, monitoring, and management for researchers. Our group optimizes our workflows and monitoring solutions to take advantage of our 24/7 operations staff, which significantly reduces the need for off-hours support. We also offer a flexible work schedule and utilize Email, Jira, Confluence, Teams, Slack, and other collaboration solutions to stay in contact.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support deployment, monitoring, and management for research projects.
- Ensure the availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems.
- Scripting using multiple tools.
- Responsibility for evaluating architecture and offering recommendations for improvements.
- Utilize automation and monitoring solutions to minimize day-to-day maintenance to optimize system management practices or system performance.
- Design, install, configure, automation, and maintenance of Server systems, Storage, Backup, in support of customer needs.
- Manage and implementing continuous process improvements.
- Provide technical consulting in the selection and purchase of hardware and software systems.
- Evaluate new technology options and vendor products.
- Collaborate with research teams to ensure new environments meet requirements.
- Identify and document IT best practices that will improve the systems deployment function.
- Ability to present and communicate complex technical concepts from small to medium groups of scientists and engineers.
- Ensure the secure and effective operation of Linux computing systems through compliance with client procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.
- Troubleshoot system problems quickly and effectively.
- Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
- Answer escalated helpline calls in addition to primary project work.
- Monitor systems performance.
- Install and configure software, both commercial packages and various open-source packages.
- Maintain documentation/notes on software builds and installs.

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science (or related field) and 5 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience managing Gitlab.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience managing UNIX/Linux Systems.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience utilizing configuration management and automation tools such as Git, Jenkins, Ansible, or Puppet.
- Moderate fluency in at least one scripting language such as Bash, Python, or equivalent.
- Experience performing advanced troubleshooting and system administration with Linux Servers.
- Experience supporting large data systems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of multiple operating systems.
- Experience with Centos/RHEL, Ubuntu, VMware
- Understanding of platforms to support users with job submissions and troubleshooting.
- Experience building and running containerized applications in a Linux environment.
- Experience managing systems utilizing GPU/Cuda clusters for AI/ML and/or image processing.
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, traffic analysis, common protocols, and network diagnostics.
- Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.
- Experience with Grafana, CheckMK, Nagios, SolarWinds, Ganglia, or other network and device monitoring systems.
- Some experience with (or desire to learn) Windows and MacOS environments.
- Previous experience working in a government, scientific or other highly technical environment.
- Good documentation skills, including ability to prepare simple documentation web pages.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment.
