EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (BLS)

Certification as a Surgical Technologist or equivalent.


MINIMUM REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience in a surgical setting required.
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, sterilization techniques, and infection control practices.
  • Ability to handle high-pressure situations and maintain focus.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.


POSITION OVERVIEW

  • Responsible for providing clinical scrubbing services, maintaining a sterile environment, and supporting the surgical team throughout procedures. This role includes training medical staff, handling specimens, responding to emergencies, and managing biomedical equipment and supplies. The Surgical Technologist/Technician must be able to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and maintain a high level of concentration and professionalism.
  • Provide scrubbing services for surgical procedures, ensuring timely presence in the operating room and coverage for assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Rotate shifts evenly among staff.
  • Train and guide residents, medical, nursing, and surgical technology students in surgical techniques and operating room procedures.
  • Offer emotional support to patients and maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Deliver care respectfully and nonjudgmentally.
  • Inform surgeons and staff about specialty surgical preferences.
  • Provide consistent information to patients and staff according to established policies and procedures.
  • Support the healthcare team by reinforcing patient education.
  • Stay updated with surgical technology through continuing education.
  • Assist in quality improvement activities and patient care.
  • Plan and prepare for each surgical procedure, ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are available.
  • Handle instruments, supplies, and equipment for a range of surgical procedures, from simple to complex.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and maintain focus during procedures.
  • Prepare prostheses and surgical devices as required.
  • Set up and maintain a sterile field with all required items, including specialized equipment for various types of surgeries.
  • Follow universal precautions and infection control policies when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment.
  • Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts before incision, before cavity closure, and at the end of the operation. Ensure accountability for all surgical items.
  • Maintain the sterile field throughout the procedure and ensure readiness of all instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Recognize and respond to critical and life-threatening situations. Provide necessary patient information to the RN/Anesthesia team for inclusion in the patient’s care plan.
  • Handle all specimens appropriately during procedures.
  • Perform non-technical maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operation before use.
  • Routinely clean the surgical work area and remove outdated or expired items.
  • Identify and address potentially hazardous situations by removing hazardous equipment from the work area.
