POSITION SUMMARY

NOTE: CSF is hiring for two School-Based Advisors. The School Based Advisor guides high school students through the complex process of college and career planning. These two advisor roles play an integral part in the PREP Project (Postsecondary Regional Equity on the Peninsula), a strategic regional partnership project focused on increasing high school to college enrollment rates for rural mission populations on the Olympic Peninsula. The roles will serve 11-12th grade students across multiple schools in rural geographies and work closely with counselors, support staff, and community partners, to provide access to higher learning opportunities and encourage students to pursue their career aspirations. Due to the frequency of in-person work requirements, successful candidates must live on or near the Olympic Peninsula.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Supports students with their academic and post-secondary education plans, including the exploration of college and career options, financial aid assistance, and college application preparation.
  • Provides resources through personalized guidance, group instruction, workshops, classroom presentations, and campus visits, to help students make informed decisions about their future.
  • Advocates for students and ensures career and college exploration is tailored to each individual, using grade level curriculum.
  • Maintains a close relationship with each student to ensure they stay on track with enrollment plans and receive the support they need navigating available services such as submitting housing applications, accepting financial aid offers, and connecting them to college access programs such as College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), and Ready to Rise.
  • Guides students and their families through financial aid presentations to inform them of options available such as the Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) and CSF's L1000 scholarship.
  • Collaborates with high-school based staff including teachers, administrators, counselors, and support staff to drive initiatives and establish curriculum that supports CSF's mission.
  • Plans, leads, and facilitates large-scale college and career related events and field trips.
  • Tracks data from events, surveys, presentations, and one-on-ones to monitor program effectiveness and submits relevant statistics to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) monthly.
  • Manages a program budget for the academic year, to be used for programming and instruction, and oversees accurate entry of monthly expenses.
  • Analyzes spending effectiveness to optimize program services and resources.
  • Fosters external partnerships with organizations and service providers such as AmeriCorps, school district personnel, and transportation and food vendors, to ensure the community is given the resources and tools they need.
  • Develops and deepens an understanding of the principles of equity and justice, applies the principles, and serves as a champion, role model, and active participant for equity and justice activities, programs, and initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

The items listed below are the minimum requirements for the job and are relevant to this position. The organization values both work experience and education and realizes that individuals take different paths to acquire knowledge.

  • Associate degree related to Education or Social.
  • Bachelor's degree in education or social work preferred.
  • Two years of experience in fields related to education, youth development, and advising preferred.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position will be considered.

Knowledge and Skills

  • List the minimum knowledge and skills needed to perform the primary duties of the job.
  • Ability to drive consistently to rural schools served by the PREP Project.
  • Knowledge of post-secondary pathways, including Universities, Community Colleges, Certificate Programs, and Military avenues.
  • Knowledge of financial aid programs such as FAFSA/WAFSA, Common App, and scholarship programs, and how to navigate the application portals.
  • Familiarity with community programs to connect students to resources to enhance engagement and outreach.
  • Knowledge of student engagement software such as Canva, Skyward, Kahoot, Survey Monkey, and Homeroom.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365 Office, Google Suite, and Salesforce for data tracking and management.
  • Works with sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Manages and fulfills frequent and competing deadlines.
  • Adapts to changing priorities and working with frequent interruptions.
  • Event planning and execution skills.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and administrative skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Works collaboratively with CSF staff, colleagues, and other collaborators.
  • Commitment to respecting individual differences and serving diverse populations.
  • Initiative to learn and enhance skills that promote equity and an understanding of oppression and its impact on underserved populations.

Professional Certifications and Licenses

  • Valid Driver's license, acceptable driver's abstract, and proof of insurance preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR certificate preferred.
  • Mental Health First Aid certificate preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Role operates within a school building in a variety of office settings from shared spaces, personal office, and classrooms.
  • Some Schools may require security badges that the advisor will be trained to use in the event of an emergency.
  • This position requires Washington state residents if assigned in a Washington based location. If this position is assigned in a District of Columbia based location the resident must reside in the District of Columbia.
  • Uses collaborative software for communicating with others and attending virtual meetings.
  • Frequent travel is required, including some evening and weekend events.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
