Land Stewardship Coordinator
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks a Land Stewardship Coordinator in the EPR Department to be based in Annapolis, and Clagett Farm in Upper Marlboro, MD.
THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FOUNDATION
Established in 1966, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to saving the Chesapeake Bay, its rivers and streams, and the wildlife that call it home through education, advocacy, litigation, and restoration. Since 2010, CBF has engaged in a focused effort to defend and implement the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint, a binding federal and state collaborative agreement aimed at reducing pollution to the science-based, legally-affirmed levels established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Blueprint is expected to be fully implemented by 2025. If the states and the federal government achieve Blueprint goals, the Bay will finally—after decades of failed efforts—be removed from the Clean Water Act’s impaired waters list. Successfully implementing the Blueprint depends on a well-informed, engaged, active, and diverse constituency of members, advocates, and volunteers who speak up and take action to save the Bay.
CBF has a staff of approximately 230 employees working in offices in Annapolis, Maryland; Richmond and Virginia Beach, Virginia; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C. as well as 14 field education program locations. Our staff and volunteer corps work throughout the region educating students and adults, advocating for clean water policies, restoring waterways, and litigating when necessary.
CBF's headquarters office in Annapolis, Maryland is the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, the world’s first U.S. Green Build Council’s LEED platinum building. In 2014, CBF opened the Brock Environmental Center—one of the world’s most energy efficient, environmentally smart buildings—in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
CBF has an annual budget of approximately $30 million and is supported by over 200,000 members and e-subscribers. For more information on CBF, please visit cbf.org.
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Environmental Protection and Restoration
CBF’s Environmental Protection and Restoration department defends and restores the Chesapeake Bay by protecting the Bay’s natural resources from pollution and other harmful activities by fighting for strong and effective laws and regulations; restoring the Bay’s essential habitats and filtering mechanisms; and involving citizens in CBF’s environmental efforts by recruiting, training, and incorporating them as effective partners and leaders.
CONTEXT OF THE POSITION
The Land Stewardship Coordinator provides critical support for CBF’s Maryland land stewardship programs and native tree nursery, located at Clagett Farm in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Through developing partnerships and facilitating land stewardship projects, the Land Stewardship Coordinator will accelerate the scope and pace of CBF’s restoration work, helping the organization and our partners achieve Bay restoration and community resilience goals.
1. Assist with Clagett Farm’s native tree nursery operations.
a. Maintain Clagett Farm’s native tree nursery, including potting, weeding, watering, and other maintenance as needed.
b. Lead nursery volunteer events, including coordinating with other CBF Departments, posting volunteer events on CBF’s website, leading volunteers through event activities, and tracking and managing volunteer data.
c. Manage and keep up-to-date tree inventory and tree sales requests.
2. Assist with logistics and event management for the Maryland land restoration program.
a. Lead event management for CBF’s land restoration program, including scheduling, registration, website updates, and event advertising.
b. Coordinate volunteer logistics during restoration events.
c. Assist with site preparation, tree delivery, event follow-up and maintenance.
3. Manage volunteer and program data.
a. Enter volunteer and restoration planting data in CBF database.
b. Coordinate data collection with CBF’s GIS Department and other relevant staff.
c. Produce the program’s annual report summarizing project outcomes and impact.
4. Coordinate with restoration partners.
a. Develop partnerships to facilitate tree plantings and land restoration projects throughout Maryland.
b. Participate in tabling opportunities to connect partners with CBF resources.
c. Collaborate with the Maryland Office Advocacy Team to provide partners and volunteers opportunities to engage in policy initiatives and programs at CBF.
5. Other duties as assigned.
Other Requirements: Physical ability to lift and carry at least 45 pounds and work outside in a variety of weather conditions. Must possess a valid driver’s license and submit a driving record to CBF prior to start of employment. Position will require driving a full-sized truck with 14’ trailer and the ability to pass a U.S. Department of Transportation physical. Ability to work occasional evenings and routinely on weekends. Flexibility to accomplish job responsibilities in several work environments, whether it be from home, on the road, or in an office.
Please note: This position splits time between CBF’s Philip Merrill Center located in Annapolis, Maryland and Clagett Farm located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland as well as other field locations throughout the state. Work location will correspond to job responsibilities that follow typical growing/planting seasons.
