Job Summary


The Construction Assistant works on-site under the direction of the Construction Site Leader with the construction and repair of homes, including performing basic carpentry tasks, and the coordination, education, and training of volunteers.  They are responsible for assisting the construction team with day-to-day operations of the construction project, including all building tasks from planning stages through certificate of occupancy and the one-year warranty inspection including but not limited to any necessary repairs.  Safety awareness and ensuring a safe work environment are a must.  The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.


The Construction Assistant upholds the mission and values of HFHHC by serving families through our affordable housing programs, including new construction, neighborhood revitalization, rehab homes and home repair projects.  They promote an environment where volunteers are productively engaged in the organization's work.  They represent HFHHC in the Horry County community, with Habitat International, and among other Habitat affiliates.



Duties and Responsibilities


Construction

  • Evaluate material needs with Site Leader and Director of Construction.
  • Assist with site readiness, setup and clean up.
  • Assist with delivery of construction materials and trailers.
  • Inventory and organize tools in all trailers and construction warehouse area.
  • Assist with oversight and training of construction volunteers.
  • Report on a weekly basis as to the status of the work sites.
  • Coordinates other construction projects as directed rehabs, recycles, emergency repairs, punch list items and deconstructions.
  • Utilize hand tools.
  • Operate power tools.
  • Clean and maintain vehicles.
  • Read blueprints.


Hands-on Tasks

  • Gather materials for workers to handle on job sites.
  • Keep job sites clean and machines serviced.
  • Cover services with plastic material to protect them.
  • Cut and install insulation.
  • Cut and fit tile or linoleum.
  • Spread adhesives on flooring to prep for tile.
  • Build scaffolding, shoring, and braces.
  • Cut timber and lumber to specified dimensions.
  • Hold timbers, lumber, and paneling in place for fastening or cutting.
  • Drill holes in lumber.
  • Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, etc. to aid in establishing reference points and lines.
  • Assist in the layout of foundation, building lines and anchor bolts.
  • Set hollow metal doors and frames.
  • Install toilets.
  • Install trim and cabinets.
  • Place and set slabs and sidewalks.
  • Unload materials from trucks.
  • Assist with slabs and elevated structures.
  • Frame wood.
  • Establish reference points and lines.
  • Coordinate and ensure all projects are completed on time.


Administrative

  • Provide assistance to other departments as needed.
  • Attend and support Habitat events with preparation assistance and facilitation as needed.
  • Attend seminars and training when requested.
  • Represent Habitat at community meetings and /or speaking engagements as requested.
  • Complete any other assignments as directed.


Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift at least 75 lbs. Work requires climbing ladders, considerable standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching awkward and tiring positions.
  • Standing for long periods of time.
  • Ability to be in and perform job in various weather conditions, including heat and cold.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Must have 1-2 year(s) experience in residential construction or enrolled in academic construction program.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask.
  • Must be dependable.
  • Must be able to communicate (verbal and written) effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Must be able to establish, foster, and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must be a good listener.
  • Must be able to solve problems effectively and work under pressure.
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends as necessary.
  • Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft software.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands on remodeling skills in selective demolition, carpentry, and general construction. 
  • Hands on skills in installing flooring, trim, doors, windows, and cabinets.
