WellStone is North Alabama's most comprehensive behavioral healthcare provider serving over 13,000 persons annually throughout Northern Alabama, with offices in Huntsville and Cullman. We are a non-profit community organization that offers a wide range of services for every phase of life, from children to older adults.

At our brand-new Pediatric Unit, part of Wellstone Emergency Services (WES), we provide care to individuals ages 12-18 who are experiencing a mental health crisis. The Education Support Specialist works as part of a comprehensive treatment team of professionals focused on the stabilization and care of individuals on our unit. Education Support Specialists provide a supportive and structured learning environment that accommodates the unique emotional and academic needs of adolescents. This is a 1st shift, Monday-Friday position.

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Experience working with or teaching adolescents, preferably in a mental health or special education setting.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent development and mental health issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with youth, mental health staff, and outside educators.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed academically and emotionally.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Deliver engaging and differentiated instruction across core subjects, ensuring that lessons are accessible to all students, regardless of their mental health status.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that fosters emotional well-being and academic success.
  • Work closely with mental health professionals, including therapists, counselors, and case managers, to ensure a holistic approach to each student’s development.
  • Regularly assess and monitor students' academic progress, adapting teaching methods to meet changing needs and abilities.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with the students’ schools, students, families, and other team members regarding academic and behavioral progress.
  • Be prepared to handle crisis situations in a calm and professional manner, following established protocols for student safety and well-being.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development related to mental health, trauma-informed practices, and special education.
