Summary:

The Senior Associate Director of Advancement is an integral member of the Advancement Team and carries primary responsibility for the school’s annual fund. The Senior Associate Director of Advancement will also serve as deputy to the Head of Advancement in major and campaign giving. Create tracking systems, donor research, maintain meeting notes and actions, and prepare solicitation materials to support the Head of School and Head of Advancement in major gift and campaign solicitations.

Annual Fund Strategy:

  • Drive philanthropic support through strategic engagement programming for annual giving, and the fostering of lifelong relationships with parents, guardians, alumni, and friends.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the school’s annual fund: recruit and coach annual fund volunteers, draft communications and solicitation letters, and manage solicitation mailings, reports, stewardship, social media, calendars, and annual fund events/programming.
  • Generate and analyze historical data from Raiser’s Edge and peer-school benchmarking data from ABADO, INDEX, and NAIS.
  • Provide data to inform annual goal setting, and, together with the HOA, set strategic direction for the Annual Fund and associated activities; set and meet monthly and annual fundraising goals.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategies to grow the annual fund, including direct mail, email campaigns, and digital fundraising initiatives.
  • Set ambitious fundraising goals and develop targeted solicitation plans to engage donors at all giving levels and increase participation rates.
  • Develop a clear plan of stewardship, relationship building, and solicitation assignments based on strong pre-existing relationships with donors.
  • Systemize annual fund communications; establish a reusable base model for annual communications, social media, appeals, and annual fund-centric programming and events.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to create compelling messaging and materials that inspire giving and highlight the impact of donor support.

SF Day Fest and Other Restricted Annual Giving:

  • Solicit, manage, and track support for SF Day Fest, the school’s annual fundraiser for adjusted tuition.
  • Partner with Head of Advancement on Fall Fest, retirement, and other special giving programs as needed.

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship:

  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit support from alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of the school for annual fund initiatives and special projects.
  • Provide personalized stewardship and recognition to donors, including acknowledgment letters, donor appreciation events, and impact reports.
  • Develop strategies to upgrade annual fund donors to major gift prospects and nurture long-term relationships with key supporters.
  • Design and implement thoughtful activities and digital tools to engage parents and alumni at all giving levels.
  • Contribute to SF Day’s commitment to institutional equity via the implementation of inclusive practices

Volunteer Management:

  • Recruit, train, and support volunteers, including annual fund co-chairs and class captains, alumni ambassadors, class agents, and reunion committee members to assist with fundraising and engagement efforts.
  • Coordinate volunteer-driven initiatives such as reunion campaigns, and alumni mentoring programs to leverage the collective power of the school community.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Utilize fundraising software and data analytics tools to track and analyze annual fund performance, donor trends, and engagement metrics.
  • Prepare regular reports and dashboards to monitor progress toward fundraising goals, evaluate campaign effectiveness, and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Conduct prospect research and segmentation analysis to identify new fundraising opportunities and inform targeted solicitation strategies. Prepare solicitation portfolios for HOA and HOS to support major gifts and campaign solicitations.

Grant Writing and Management:

  • Research, identify, and pursue grant opportunities from government agencies, foundations, and other grant-making organizations.
  • Prepare compelling grant proposals, applications, and reports that effectively communicate the school's impact, outcomes, and funding needs.
  • Manage grant compliance, reporting requirements, and stewardship activities to maintain positive relationships with grantors and secure renewed support.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, philanthropy, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in annual giving, major gifts or development, preferably within a school or educational institution.
  • Proven track record in fundraising, donor cultivation, and stewardship, with experience in implementing successful annual fund campaigns and engaging alumni.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate donors, volunteers, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in fundraising software and data management systems, with experience in data analysis and reporting.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute innovative fundraising strategies, set priorities, and adapt to changing priorities and opportunities.
  • Passion for education and a commitment to advancing the mission and values of the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of progressively successful experience leading an annual giving program.
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills as well as ability to work with and inspire volunteers and Advancement colleagues.
  • Experience with data segmentation and analysis; understanding of fundraising software (Raiser’s Edge), gift processing and donor relations, social networking, and electronic marketing.
  • Ability to provide direction and motivation to others through communication, modeling appropriate behavior, optimism, and high achievement.
  • Good time-management skills, the ability to multitask under pressure, creative problem-solving skills, and strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Develop good rapport with parents, faculty and staff, alumni, and all others connected to the school -- embrace and support the school community and its mission and values.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Occasional requirement to lift more than 25 lbs
