Firearms Training Simulator Manager

Position Overview:
The Firearms Training Experience is an additional ticketed opportunity, sponsored by The Stanley W. Ekstrom Foundation, that engages guests in use-of-force exercises based on the training law enforcement officers receive. Guests are led through simulated and live-action scenarios in which they respond to real and perceived threats. The experience culminates in a debriefing that encourages reflection and discussion. Through instruction, guidance, and feedback, participants leave with a deeper understanding of the real-life challenges law enforcement officers face when they encounter situations that may require the use of force.
Reporting to the Sr. Director of Guest Experience, the FTE Manager oversees the daily operations of the Firearms Training Experience, serves as lead Training Officer, and is responsible for the professional development of staff. This individual also participates in the ongoing refinement of the Firearms Training Experience, and the development and implementation of programs, activities and other guest engagement designed to further expand the Museum’s presentation of historical and contemporary topics related to law enforcement.
Major Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Continually assess and refresh an informative, entertaining and innovative Firearms Training experience, with the goal of promoting the organization's mission of advancing the public understanding of organized crime's history and impact on American society
- Provide direct supervision of and professional development of Firearms Training staff; collaborate with the People & Culture department in the recruitment, onboarding, training and performance management of staff.
- Responsible for scheduling, approving PTO requests, timecards, etc., and ensuring proper staffing levels.
- Maintain expertise in all Training Officer job functions.
- Provide leadership in guest handling and service recovery efforts for situations related to the Firearms Training experience.
- Perform basic exhibit maintenance including troubleshooting technology components, inspecting and repairing broken or malfunctioning parts of equipment.
- Maintain inventory, track and order equipment and supplies.
- Support special events, programs, educational outreach, fundraising and promotional efforts related to the Firearms Training experience.
- Collaborate with public operations management team to review unique guest situations, factors impacting guest satisfaction, efficiency of operations, etc.
- Collaborate with Exhibits & Programs as well as other departments in conceptualizing, planning, and executing the development of new video training scenarios and special programming and other initiatives to advance the Museum’s presentation of law enforcement topics.
- Demonstrate leadership in fostering an organizational culture that values innovation, promotes inclusion, and inspires excellence in the work environment.
- Stay abreast of in-house exhibitions, educational programs, and related community events to keep staff and guests well-informed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience / Qualifications / Requirements:
- Must demonstrate a high level of professional management in performing training activities and facilitating training experience at all times.
- Must demonstrate an understanding and sensitivity to the complexity of use-of-force issues.
- Must be able to tactfully and diplomatically discuss subject matter related to use-of-force, policing, training, and related topics, with Museum guests.
- Comfortable responding to visceral guest reactions and assisting as they process the experience/information provided.
- Proven track record for effectively training, coaching, and mentoring.
- Able to provide real-time feedback to guests and offering suggestions for alternative courses of action in scenarios.
- At least 3 years of experience in the supervision of others is required; demonstrated ability to instruct staff on providing feedback, coaching on improvisation and adjustment of delivery/feedback based upon guests’ response.
- Familiarity with firearms, safety and training is required.
- Familiarity with law enforcement, military, use-of-force, or similar training is preferred.
- Should possess outgoing and personable demeanor; superior interpersonal, facilitation, and public speaking skills.
- High integrity and strong ethical character.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Demonstrable sensitivity and awareness of issues relating to access and inclusion.
- Able to take ownership of problematic situations using proper judgment to find possible solutions or alternatives while maintaining positive guest relationships.
- Able to manage people effectively in high stress situations and to collaborate well across departments.

- Proficiency in languages in addition to English is a plus.
- Flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Able to stand for extended periods and walk through exhibit space is required.
Background / Education:
- Preference is given for law enforcement experience and/or law enforcement instructor/field training officer background.
