Legal Assistant/Data Entry

Office of the Prosecutor

Department of Justice Services

Hourly Wage: $15.74-$17.72/Regular/Full-Time


Performs confidential legal support services and contributes data to a unique digital case management system. The employee will maintain criminal case files, manage record keeping, and ensure security of all confidential information. Employee is expected to work independently maintaining ethical standards mandated by Tribal law, regulation, and policy. Employee will also be responsible, upon appointment, for reading and understanding the Washington State Rules of Professional Conduct to ensure their actions are consistent with the responsibilities of a prosecutor office. Assignments are reviewed periodically by the supervisor for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with applicable guidelines, polices, and laws.

Examples of Work Performed:

Picking up hard copies or downloading digital copies of tickets, warrant service reports, and warrant request reports on a daily basis for processing.

Filing of legal documents and tickets with the Yakama Nation Courts and documenting service of process on opposing counsel or pro se defendants, as necessary.

Ensures documents created or received in criminal case files are accurately uploaded in the case management system as soon as possible, providing accurate statistical data for the monthly reporting to the Lead Tribal Prosecutor.

Identifying specific legal documents which would need the attention of a prosecutor in a timely manner.

Ensure court hearing dates are calendared in the data management system in a timely manner.

Consistent and timely attendance is required to complete daily processing of documents.

Upload for digital storage of archived or closed criminal files, as time permits.

Expected to cooperate or support other Prosecutor Office personnel with the execution of their duties by providing assistance as requested, where it does not conflict with their own work responsibilities.

Establishing rapport with Yakama Nation Police Department and Yakama Nation Probation staff to ensure efficient daily processing of criminal tickets, warrant requests, compliance reports, and warrants.

Additional duties can include assisting with routine office reception duties including, but not limited to, identifying and proper routing of documents received, identifying issues presented at the front office and suggesting proper referrals or attention to the issue, completing daily mail pick up.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of client and program information.

Ability to objectively secure and process information as required by the position.

Knowledge and experience implementing modern secretarial and general office principles, practices, and techniques.

Ability to accurately and efficiently complete repetitive data information management.

General knowledge of the Yakama Nation legal system and court procedures.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to work independently and exercise own initiative and judgment.

Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines.

Ability to understand and execute oral or written instructions.

Ability to communicate well orally and in written form.

Ability to learn legal terminology and document formats, Yakama Nation Court procedures and policies, Yakama laws & regulations, and ethical rules for law offices.

Knowledge and ability to use a computer and various contemporary software programs.

Ability and willingness to maintain Tribal and Office policy for social media participation.



Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma AND satisfactory completion of a legal support courses including training on using contemporary software programs or other Information Technology (IT) OR three years of experience in a law office, court, law enforcement, or in digital data management. OR Associate degree in the field of legal support, business, or IT.

Must not have a felony record of offenses in state or federal jurisdictions.

Must not have any criminal misdemeanor convictions within the State and Tribal Courts within past five years or have any matters pending before any of these courts.

Must have no past, current, or pending dependency action in the State of Tribal Courts.

Must pass a pre-employment background check.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
