What You Will Be Doing:


Summary

Under the supervision and direction of an attorney, the Legal Assistant, Paralegal performs a variety of paraprofessional, contracting, and administrative duties to support the attorneys in HPSJ’s Legal Department. The Legal Assistant, Paralegal performs legal research, drafts correspondence to subpoenas and record requests, edits contracts, prepares legal documents and correspondences, works with in-house and outside counsel to provide litigation support, and tracks case-related deadlines. Also provides other administrative support for the Legal Department such as preparing department reports, processing invoices, expense reports, taking meeting minutes, and scheduling meetings.

Essential Functions
  • Performs project-specific legal research and prepares reports and memoranda.
  • Assists in processes related to HPSJ being a public entity such as analyzing Public Records Act requests, Government Tort Claims, etc. and coordinating and drafting responses to such requests or claims.
  • Works with HPSJ business units to collect, compile, organize, and prepare documents for a variety of matters.
  • As directed, provides support with analyzing, reviewing, editing, drafting, and proofreading of legal documents, including contracts, correspondence, and responses to subpoenas and record requests.
  • Provides litigation support with coordinating discovery, document tracking and production, redactions, and any other administrative functions involving the review and processing of legal claims.
  • May interview staff and others in connection with investigations directed by attorneys.
  • Collects, organizes, and summarizes a wide variety of documents, information, materials, reports, and evidence.
  • Works within HPSJ contract management system to track legal reviews of contracts with vendors and providers.
  • Identifies, researches, compiles, evaluates, tracks and summarizes laws, regulations, cases, legal articles, All Plan Letters, and other relevant information.
  • Coordinates and prepares meetings with internal staff and external stakeholders as needed, including agenda preparation, virtual or physical room setup, and taking meeting minutes.
  • Leads and/or assists with project management for Legal Department projects.
  • Assist in development or improvement of document templates, Legal Department workflows and operations, and policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the development of workflows, policies and procedures, and training related to Legal Department operations.
  • Maintains matters by triaging priorities, monitors and updates status, tracks deadlines, maintains logs, and prepares reports.
  • Proactively follows up on pending matters and exercises independent problem solve techniques to resolve administrative issues.
  • Processes Legal Department invoices and expense reports.
  • Maintains confidentiality consistent with ethical obligations, attorney-client privilege, and attorney work product protections.
  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for executing new and varied requests.
  • Contributes to the team effort by performing other tasks and administrative support as needed.

What You Have:

Education and Experience

Required

  • Paralegal certificate from an accredited program (Juris Doctor degree accepted)
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in a paralegal or legal assistant position

Preferred

  • Experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements under attorney supervision strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a public entity setting strongly preferred.
  • Experience in health care strongly preferred.
  • Experience with litigation preferred.

Licenses, Certifications
  • Paralegal certificate from an accredited program (Juris Doctor degree accepted)

Physical Demands
