Your day to day as a Peer Recovery Specialist II - Hampton Roads Clinic

At the Hampton Roads Clinic under Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, we are committed to assisting individuals struggling with opioid dependence in their journey to recovery. Our outpatient services focus on utilizing methadone, under proper medical guidance, to aid in recovery from opioids like prescription pain medications, heroin, and morphine. Alongside medication-assisted treatment, we offer a range of psycho-social services, including counseling and peer support, to address the holistic needs of our adult patients living with opioid use disorders.

As a Peer Recovery Specialist, you play a crucial role in providing empathetic and essential support services to guide individuals towards accessing necessary mental health and substance use disorder services, ensuring they receive the care and assistance needed for successful recovery.

To excel in the role of Peer Recovery Specialist II at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board's Hampton Roads Clinic, candidates must possess essential qualifications and skills. Successful candidates will have firsthand experience with a substance use condition and a minimum of 12 months of solid recovery, demonstrating growth in understanding and managing their condition while actively building a fulfilling life beyond it. Moreover, candidates must hold registration as a Peer Recovery Specialist with the VA Board of Counseling (RPRS), having completed the required DBHDS 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training, along with at least one year of relevant experience in the field.

These qualifications ensure that individuals are equipped to provide empathetic and effective peer support to those navigating substance use disorders and recovery journeys.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:
  • The requirements for the Peer Recovery Specialist II position include being a person who has experienced a substance use condition and who has a minimum of 12 months of successful recovery including making progress in learning about and managing their condition and in developing a life outside of or in addition to this condition.
  • Candidates must be a Registered Peer Recovery Specialist with the VA Board of Counseling (RPRS) which includes the completion of DBHDS 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training
  • One year of Peer Recovery Specialist experience.
