Yard Supervisor

The Yard Supervisor works closely with the General Manager and is responsible for the daily operations of the lumber yard and supervising the yard staff to maintain efficient workflow. This position is accountable for all activities of the warehouse, yard, and transportation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Manages the yard personnel by providing day-to-day direction, coordination, and supervision. Position is responsible for rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Provides daily direction to yard staff to ensure all orders and deliveries are done efficiently and timely.
  • Ensure that the inventory is organized for maximum efficiency using proper storage methods, identification, and stock location based on turnover, environmental factors, and physical capabilities of facilities.
  • Ensure all materials are received and recorded into inventory accurately and correctly.
  • Manages and coordinates the receiving and unloading of materials timely.

Inventory

  • Work with the General Manager to ensure inventory is accurate and correct.
  • Responsible for Inventory by conducting inventory counts, investigating discrepancies and adjusting errors.
  • Leads and directs the yard personnel in the preparation and performing physical inventory.
  • Identifies and proactively manages slow moving and dead stock
  • Special order report is maintained as outlined by Company policy
  • Dead stock is managed and dealt with proactively prior physical inventories.
  • Manages all inventory by examining and inspecting for any damage.

Leadership

  • The Yard Supervisor is a working Supervisor; thus, the position must be able to train staff and work in yard as needed.
  • Manages the yard personnel by providing day-to-day direction, coordination, and supervision. Position is responsible for rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Identify and articulate performance expectations to employees.
  • Assist as needed in the performance evaluations of employees from other departments assigned to your location.

Safety

  • Work with the General Manager to manage the Branch’s safety program.
  • Conduct/monitor accident investigations
  • Team members always wear high visibility/proper uniform
  • Works with Ops Lead to review daily equipment inspection reports for all fleet equipment, and ensures necessary maintenance and repairs are completed in a timely manner
  • Maintains a comfortable and safe working environment for all employees
  • Team always demonstrates consistency in following all company's safety protocols
  • Ensures safety committee meetings occur monthly, members are properly trained, and appropriate documents are uploaded to shared folder
  • Ensures yard follows proper and timely reporting of all necessary accident and claim reports
  • Ensure that the team keeps the facility in excellent, organized shape.

Communication

  • Works cordially, professionally, diplomatically and with a high level of customer service with internal and external staff.
  • Promptly respond to customer complaints and concerns
  • Sets expectations and goals, holds people accountable
  • Communicates to people in their environment (walks the yard and communicates there, spends time at counter, etc.)

Qualifications

  • 3 years prior supervisory/management experience
  • Knowledge of management principles, practices, and production methodologies
  • Knowledge of lumber and plywood preferable
  • Must be able to operate personal computer, smartphone, scanner, and any other equipment necessary for the job
  • Must be able to type 30+ WPM
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to identify a broad range of building product materials, their grades, allowable tolerances and application techniques
  • Ability to think and respond quickly, positively and professionally to constantly changing circumstances
  • Demonstrates great listening skills and follow-up as necessary
  • Both local and overnight travel may be required
