Lumber Yard Operations Supervisor

The Lumber Yard Operations Supervisor collaborates closely with the General Manager and oversees the daily functions of the lumber yard while managing the yard personnel to ensure a seamless workflow. This role is responsible for all aspects of the warehouse, yard, and logistics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directs yard staff by providing daily guidance, coordination, and oversight. This role includes the authority to reward and discipline employees, address grievances, and resolve issues.
  • Ensures that all orders and deliveries are executed efficiently and punctually by providing daily instructions to yard personnel.
  • Maintains an organized inventory for optimal efficiency through appropriate storage techniques, proper identification, and strategic stock placement based on turnover rates and facility capabilities.
  • Guarantees accurate receipt and recording of all materials into inventory.
  • Coordinates the timely receiving and unloading of materials.

Inventory Management:

  • Works alongside the General Manager to maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Conducts inventory counts, investigates discrepancies, and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Leads yard personnel in preparing for and executing physical inventory counts.
  • Identifies and manages slow-moving and obsolete stock proactively.
  • Maintains special order reports as per company policy.
  • Proactively addresses dead stock prior to physical inventory counts.
  • Inspects all inventory for damage and ensures proper management.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • The Lumber Yard Operations Supervisor is a hands-on leader, capable of training staff and working alongside them in the yard as needed.
  • Provides daily direction and supervision to yard personnel, with responsibilities for employee performance management.
  • Clearly communicates performance expectations to team members.
  • Assists in evaluating the performance of employees from other departments assigned to the yard.

Safety Management:

  • Collaborates with the General Manager to oversee the safety program of the branch.
  • Conducts and monitors investigations into accidents.
  • Ensures all team members wear appropriate uniforms and high-visibility gear.
  • Reviews daily equipment inspection reports with the Operations Lead and ensures timely maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintains a safe and comfortable working environment for all employees.
  • Ensures adherence to safety protocols and conducts monthly safety committee meetings.
  • Ensures timely reporting of all necessary accident and claim reports.
  • Promotes a well-organized and clean facility.

Communication Skills:

  • Interacts professionally and courteously with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Responds promptly to customer inquiries and concerns.
  • Sets clear expectations and holds team members accountable.
  • Engages with staff on the ground, ensuring effective communication throughout the yard.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Familiarity with management principles, practices, and production methodologies.
  • Knowledge of lumber and plywood is preferred.
  • Proficient in operating computers, smartphones, scanners, and other necessary equipment.
  • Typing speed of 30+ words per minute.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to identify various building materials, their grades, tolerances, and application methods.
  • Demonstrates quick, positive, and professional responses to changing situations.
  • Exhibits strong listening skills and follows up as needed.
  • Willingness to travel locally and overnight as required.

  • Monday to Friday
  • Work Location: In-person (Remote work is not available)
