Job DescriptionJob Description

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is looking for a Coatings Engineer to Research and develop new coating technologies for North and South American production through collaborative work with Engineering Design, Manufacturing, and Plant Purchasing divisions. This role is located in our Materials Development Department at our Superior Township, MI (just East of Ann Arbor) location.

In this role you will:

  • Innovate and validate new coating technologies (paint, e-coat, wax, adhesive, sealers, etc.). Includes patent submissions, R & D projects, co-work with Hyundai Motor Group suppliers, and Hyundai R&D center in South Korea.
  • Implement new coatings for North and South American production, which includes co-work with Purchasing and Manufacturing divisions, Hyundai R&D center in South Korea, and local material suppliers.
  • Audit quality of current production coatings (paint, e-coat, wax, adhesive, sealers, etc.), and participate in vehicle quality teardowns and evaluations on-site at HMG production facilities.
  • Support Hyundai Motor Group and North / South American manufacturing locations with resolving quality issues relating to paint, e-coat, wax, adhesive, sealers, etc. by consulting with plant manufacturing locations and associated suppliers to identify and resolve production problems.
  • Benchmark industry activities and report results to appropriate departments.
  • Improve the quality of current Hyundai and Kia coated production parts (paint, e-coat, wax, adhesive, sealers, etc.).
  • Assist in planning and monitoring of department budgets.
  • Create and present technical reports as assigned.
  • Perform administrative functions such as purchasing requests, vacation requests, travel requests, etc.
  • Perform additional projects as assigned, such as co-work projects with other HATCI teams and the Materials Center in Namyang, South Korea.
  • Travel up to 20% of time domestically and internationally.

Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or Polymer Science
  • 0-3 years of experience in materials, coatings, or paint engineering;
  • Valid Driver's License and Satisfactory Driving Record
