Washington, United States Office of National Drug Control Policy Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

The Executive Office of the President's Office of National Drug Control Policy (EOP/ONDCP) leads interagency and intergovernmental policy development and analysis work focused on two distinct but interconnected mission spheres: public health interventions aimed at reducing illicit substance use or misuse of prescription drugs, treating substance use disorder, and developing and enhancing resources for those in recovery from substance use; and interdiction initiatives aimed at reducing the trafficking and overall availability of illicit substances and their chemical precursors.
ONDCP's Office of External and Legislative Affairs (OELA) provides support to the Director and all components on legislative affairs, engagement with stakeholders, and media.  This component develops and implements strategies to convey the Administration’s drug policies and priorities to the media, government officials, the public and stakeholders.  This includes working closely with national, State, local and Tribal leaders; public health and public safety officials; and stakeholder organizations.  Additionally, this component advances the Administration’s drug policies with the United States Congress through outreach to Members and their staff.  This includes involvement in the Congressional hearing process, as well as responding to Congressional inquiries.

ONDCP/OELA seeks intern(s) who are highly motivated to contribute to ONDCP's critical mission:
Each OELA intern will support one of the following:
•    media relations for the Director and agency via researching, reviewing, writing communications, list-building, helping draft social media posts and press releases, assisting with logistics for virtual and in-person media events, and other duties as assigned
•    intergovernmental affairs and stakeholder outreach by tracking and summarizing State, local, and Tribal drug policies, assisting with virtual and in-person events, and other duties as assigned
•    legislative affairs via researching congressional members, tracking legislation, compiling research, reviewing hearings, assisting with hearing preparation, and other duties as assigned.

The Fall 2024 internship term is currently scheduled to begin on September 16, 2024, and currently set to end on December 20, 2024.  Interns will receive stipend payments of $375/week for part-time interns and $750/week for full-time interns.  Part-time is considered a minimum of 15 hours/week to 34 hours/week; full-time is considered 35 – 40 hours/week.  Stipend payments will be calculated based on the hourly rate (part-time or full-time) multiplied by the total weeks in the session (14).  Two thirds of the overall stipend amount will be paid on or about the beginning of the internship; the remaining one third will be paid upon successful completion of the internship.  In the event an internship ends early for any reason, the intern may be required to reimburse the government for any stipend amounts or portion thereof paid to the intern.  All internships are located in Washington, D.C.  All intern schedules are Monday – Friday and interns may only work between the hours of 7am – 7pm ET.

Selected interns must be available for the entire duration of the Fall 2024 session (i.e., September 16 through December 20, 2024); and must be available for the entirety of the first day of the program (September 16, 2024).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be a U.S. citizen;
• Must be 18 years of age or older;
• Males must be registered with the Selective Service;
• Must be able to commit to at least 15 hours per week;
• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate college, community college, or university at least half-time;
• Must pass a background check and drug test;
• You may not receive compensation for this internship from any other source apart from the Executive Office of the President's stipend.

The Application has been extended and will now be open from 6/10/2024 to 7/8/2024. Applications will close on 7/8/2024 around 8 am. However, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible during the application window.

This internship will be conducted onsite/in-person; Telework is not available for internship positions.
