Job Title: Academic Support Teacher

Upper School teachers are critical to the success of our school.  They create a safe, engaging learning environment favorable to the learning and personal growth of every student.  They establish effective rapport with students and inspire them to develop faith, knowledge, skills, and attitudes, which will prepare them for life.  They challenge every student to excel at the highest level and establish great relationships with parents, which fosters trust and makes for a successful home and school partnership. 


This position reports directly to the Academic Support Coordinator.


Salary is commensurate with experience. 


Key Responsibilities 


  • Understand with complete clarity the mission and vision of the school and communicate it throughout the organization. 
  • Support the Academic Support Coordinator and other Academic Support Teachers with students on the caseload by assisting in communication with parents and teachers, gradebook reviews for missing assignments and upcoming assignments 
  • Communicate academic concerns with Academic Support Team (when applicable) and Upper School Administration 
  • Be the consistent leader in all study halls, helping students with time management and organizational skills, and ensure they are progressing as it relates to their assignments.
  • Utilize Blackbaud to identify struggling students, and collaborate with upper school administrators to course correct.
  • Provide a safe, welcoming, well-prepared and managed environment for study hall and academic support services with the vision, mission, and policies of VAA; inspiring and modeling Christ-like character, God-dependency, and church attendance/participation. 
  • Be aware of the implementation of accommodation plans for students with diagnosed learning differences/disabilities.
  • Proactively and wisely communicate and partner with parents and fellow staff members throughout the learning process/school year. 
  • Build relationships with students and parents (especially the students), which transcend the classroom and create life-long influence; attending school and student events as possible and/or required.
  • Meet with the Academic Support Coordinator and Upper School Administration as necessary to problem solve, receive and give feedback, and further advance the school’s mission.
  • Provide assessments for students as requested by the Academic Support Coordinator and give direction to parents on assessment services.
  • Support the school’s accommodation plans during the study hall blocks; working with parents, teachers, and administrators to provide for an individual plan of success for each student referred to academic support. 
  • Meet with upper school students as needed to provide academic coaching in the areas of self-advocacy and executive functioning skills. 
  • Provide out-of-class accommodations, such as testing accommodations (ex: extended time, finishing completing the assigned timed minutes for exams)
  • Maintain compliance with all school staff policies and procedures as communicated by the staff handbook and school leadership. 
  • Review student/staff handbook; ensuring student and parent adherence. 
  • Answer incoming emails and phone calls with a professional response within 48 hours. 
  • Attend weekly upper school divisional meetings.
  • Meet with parents for feedback, concern resolution, and student course correction as needed. 
  • Administer yearly Standardized tests as needed. 
  • Manage and/or assist with the end of year pack up and storage of classroom/school supplies, rooms, etc. 
  • Assist certain teachers as needed and/or requested by principals.
  • Attend student life events as requested. 
  • Attend school orientation for training and preparation for each school year. 
  • Provide occasional lectures to teachers regarding special needs, differentiation, etc. 
  • Prescribe to all action plans for future growth as prescribed by the principal through informal and formal performance reviews/observations. 
  • Set and meet yearly goals demonstrating personal and professional growth; achieving the required total of yearly continuing education credits.
  • Submit purchase requests for needed supplies. 
  • Submit reimbursement requests for approved purchases of needed supplies as needed. 
  • Receive and relay payments for text replacements, special field trips, and activities as needed.

Education:


Required

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited, four-year institution 


Desired

Master’s Degree in Special Education


Experience:


Required

A passion for teaching

Demonstrated ability to work with children/youth with a variety of special needs, learning differences, and deficiencies.

Well-rounded knowledge of the education process and subject matter.


Desired

3 years experience working in special education, assessing student needs and developing individual education plans. 

Experience in a church-run school

Proficiency in Google Workspace
