  • This position is about 8 hours a week
  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 11am - 1pm
  • Hiring for Summer Session but could be extended into Fall 2024/2025 School Year


POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position supports the work of Jowonio School, a leading not-for-profit preschool committed to providing inclusive programs for young children of all abilities. Through a team approach, our educational programs provide children with special needs and typically developing peers the opportunity to learn in the same classroom. The Lunch Aide intentionally fosters a culture where all are encouraged to reach their potential while ensuring a safe learning environment, and provides support for Jowonio employees and operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with the full range of children in the classroom. ● Work with children 1:1 and in groups to support engagement in daily classroom activities and routines while staff members are taking their lunch breaks. Support of children to include: o Providing consistent supervision, being alert to safety concerns and responding quickly and calmly to maintain safety of all; 

o Following the classroom support schedule and being attentive to the environment to prioritize areas where support is needed; 

o Facilitating positive social interaction between peers; 

o Facilitating smooth and safe transitions between activities and locations in the building o Using positive approaches to prevent and respond to behavioral challenges; o Addressing care needs of children including feeding, toileting, dressing, caring for belongings, etc. 

  • Build positive relationships and participate in collaborative work with team members, demonstrating constructive approaches to problem-solving when needed.
  • Participate with team members in maintaining up-to-date child and classroom records, including but not limited to: 

o Reporting accidents and significant incidents to Lead Teachers and school administration ● Participate in family all-school and classroom events such as potluck suppers, open houses and programs such as the Follies. 

  • Respond to suggestions and modeling from lead teachers. Implement discussed and practiced strategies with increasing independence. 
  • Participate in collaborative work with team members, demonstrating constructive approaches to problem-solving when needed. 
  • Attend in-services and paid staff meetings when relevant, and engage in continuing education. 
  • Maintain best practices and regulations established by oversight agencies including OCFS and NYSED, as well as Jowonio policies and procedures 
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Strong verbal communication skills 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • High school diploma required 
  • One or more years of experience with young children and/or children with special needs in an educational setting 
  • Ability to successfully build caring and supportive relationships, relate sensitively to, and engage with children with a range of abilities and needs 
  • Ability to maintain privacy and protect confidential information 
  • Experience working as part of a collaborative team, in preschool settings, and with children with special needs is preferred 
  • Training in/knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Integration, and other developmental challenges is desirable

  • Mobility sufficient to address unpredictable behaviors in children is required. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust. 
  • The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
  • The employee must be physically able to hear/understand communication from children, and able to clearly convey messages to the children. 
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to address unpredictable behaviors in children is required.
