Position Overview:

KIPP DC is looking for a dynamic, committed and flexible Behavior Intervention Technician to become part of our vibrant educational community.  The KIPP DC Behavior Intervention Technician will do whatever it takes to improve student achievement and ensure that students are progressing on their individual goals.  

KIPP DC Behavior Intervention Technicians are responsible for delivering effective, high-quality, interventions that are data driven.  KIPP DC staff approach work with a sense of possibility and see challenges as opportunities for creative problem solving.  KIPP DC gives its students an intensive foundation in the core academic subjects with an emphasis on developing the knowledge and skills necessary for success in school and in life.  The KIPP DC community holds itself to high standards, cognizant that success can be achieved by all, regardless of challenging circumstances, through teamwork, tenacity and focused dedication.

Key Responsibilities:

Diagnose, Model and Deliver Services

  • Demonstrate positive, collaborative problem-solving orientation with students, parents and guardians, educators, administrators, community members, and colleagues
  • Work collaboratively with staff to identify students and classes with behavior support needs using school-wide data
  • Provide core services including: prevention, consultation, intervention, assessment, and counseling. Services include, but are not limited to, conducting observations, collecting data, reviewing student records, conferring with teachers and parents, interviewing students, conducting functional assessments, counseling (individual and group), planning behavior interventions, and conducting in-services and professional development. These core services are adapted to the particular needs of each student, situation, and setting
  • Serve in a consultative role with designated personnel to offer prevention and intervention strategies related to learning and behavioral problems of students; and provide consultation on an on-going basis to teachers, parents, and other school personnel to resolve students’ learning and behavioral problems
  • Provide group and individual therapy and classroom support to special education students, and general education students, as well as monitor the students’ responses to the interventions identified
  • Complete and monitor pre-referral paperwork as it relates to the social/ emotional functioning of students 
  • Complete paperwork for students with 504 plans, as well as monitor the implementation of the accommodations identified in the plans
  • Establish and monitor a continuum of scientifically based behavior interventions and supports
  • Identify the function of students' behavior(s) in order to develop individualized, strength based interventions that will result in positive behavior change and incorporate into Tier 2 Fair Plans
  • Conduct Functional Behavioral Analyses (FBA) to incorporate into Tier 3 Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)
  • Develop Fair Plans or Functional behavior Plans as appropriate and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)

Lead and Develop Programming

  • Help all stakeholders understand child development and how it affects student performance academically and social/emotionally
  • Develop and monitor student responses to behavior intervention plans, including providing support and consultation to general and special education teachers
  • Provide training for the implementation of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and other evidence-based interventions for skill replacement and behavior reduction
  • Provide professional development support, assistance, staff development and coaching to paraprofessionals and staff members as requested on applied behavioral analysis and effective intervention strategies
  • Develop and implement evidence-based behavioral intervention programs to support students and teachers
  • Coach teachers and leaders with constructive feedback and creative suggestions in the use of non-aversive approaches to behavior change
  • Provide training, support and leadership in communication with students, instructional staff, and parents regarding behavior intervention plans (BIPs)

Support our School and Community

  • Participate in mediations, administrative reviews, hearings and due process proceedings, as needed
  • Participate in disciplinary proceedings: expulsions, manifestations, and causation meetings
  • Be available for Open Houses, Parent-Teacher Conferences and other events involving parents outside of normal operating hours
  • Hold high expectations for each student and exhibit positive rapport with all students
  • Demonstrate strong pedagogical content knowledge
  • Implement the school-wide student management policies within classrooms and everywhere on campus 
  • Create and foster a positive learning environment 
  • Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all parents
  • Remain on call in the evenings (via school cell phone) to provide student support 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
  • Advanced Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Behavioral Science, Education or related field (preferred)
  • Three or more years of teaching in special education/behavior intervention experience in a PK-12 school (preferred)
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) or documented advanced level experience/training in this field
  • Ability to conduct and interpret functional behavioral assessments (FBA) in the development of effective behavior intervention plans (BIP)
  • Experience creating and managing FBAs and BIPs

Compensation & Benefits:

  • When it comes to compensation, at KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. We look at compensation benchmarks in schools across DC. Behavior Intervention Technician salaries are salaried non-exempt and start at $58,320 and eligible for overtime over 40 hours worked per week. Please see the salary scale here.  
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 10 paid sick days, 12 paid holidays, paid Thanksgiving week break, winter break, spring break, and summer break. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
  • All employees who use public transit through WMATA are eligible for pre-tax deductions for transportation costs.
  • Staff are provided with a laptop computer for work and access to a discounted cell phone plan for staff/student/parent calls.
