Job DescriptionJob Description

Santa Monica Proper Hotel is seeking an experienced and charismatic Food and Beverage Service Manager to oversee Front-of-House Operations within our hotel outlets. 

A seamless merger of historic retrofit and new construction, our 271-room hotel features interior design by international style icon Kelly Wearstler, multiple dining options by local area culinary stars, a rooftop lounge and swimming pool, and 24,000 square feet of meeting and event space.

The Food and Beverage Service Manager will ensure exceptional guest experiences and lead the front of house team to maintain the highest standards of service and hospitality. This position will maintain a high level of service and visibility on the floor to assure that the wants and needs of our guests are consistently exceeded. This is a highly visible role and one that excels in delivering superior service standards and cultivating guest experiences.  

Responsibilities:

Guest Experience

  • Greet and welcome guests, ensuring a warm and professional first impression
  • Manage the floor dining room flow and guest seating arrangements
  • Handle special requests and FOP guests with discretion and attentiveness
  • Resolve guest complaints and concerns promptly and effectively

Reservations & Seating

  • Oversee the reservation system and manage bookings efficiently
  • Coordinate private dining and special event reservations
  • Optimize table turnover while ensuring guest satisfaction
  • Maintain an organized and up-to-date waitlist during peak hours

Staff Management

  • Lead, train, and supervise the front-of-house team, including hosts and servers
  • Conduct regular colleague meetings and briefings to ensure smooth service
  • Provide ongoing training and performance feedback to colleagues

 Service Quality

  • Uphold and enforce high standards of service and presentation
  • Conduct regular service audits and implement improvements
  • Ensure proper table settings, cleanliness, and overall ambiance of the dining area
  • Collaborate with the kitchen to ensure timely and quality food service

Communication & Coordination

  • Act as a liaison between front-of-house and back-of-house teams
  • Coordinate with the bar colleagues to ensure seamless beverage service
  • Provide detailed handover information between shifts

Menu & Wine Knowledge

  • Maintain extensive knowledge of menu offerings, ingredients, and preparation methods
  • Stay informed about wine selections and pairings to assist guests 
  • Train colleagues on menu items, daily specials, and wine recommendations

Qualification Standards:

Specific Job Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management or work experience equivalent is required

  • Additional hospitality training or certificates is desired
  • Certification in ServSafe and RBS are required

 Experience:

  • A minimum of seven years of fine dining restaurant experience, with at least 3 years in a senior front of house role is required; hotel experience is preferred 
  • Extensive knowledge of food and wine pairings
  • Impeccable personal presentation and a passion for hospitality
  • Strong F&B management skills with leadership strengths in building strong working relationships across all levels of the hotel
  • Excellent leadership and mentoring skills; ability to empower others to be successful
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Fluency in English; additional languages are a plus
  • Proficiency in restaurant management and reservation software
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • High standards of professionalism with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal that allow for smooth interactions with guests, colleagues, and vendors
  • Excellent organizational skills supportive of the operations 

Physical Demands:

  • Position requires walking and giving direction most of the working day.  Length of time of these tasks may vary from day to day and task to task
  • Must be able to exert well-paced ability to maneuver between functions occurring simultaneously 
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. on a regular and continuing basis
  • Must be able to push and pull carts and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. occasionally

Work Environment: The employee is exposed to working indoors and outdoors around normal, high and cold temperatures with normal noise levels. 

Appearance and Grooming: All colleagues must maintain a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance per Proper’s Manager Style Guide

Other: Due to the cyclical nature of the hotel, managers may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the operation.  Managers must be able to work flexible schedules and willing and able to work shifts that may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
