Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Facilities Director, the Security Guard ensures Museum guests and staff experience a safe environment in the Museum and the surrounding outdoor areas. Security’s role is to observe and react intuitively and quickly, constantly modeling a respectable presence. Through this role, the Security Guard creates an atmosphere in which all can play comfortably and safely.

Essential Functions: 

  • Controlling the entrance and departure of employees, visitors, vendors, and vehicles according to  protocols 
  • Monitor Museum entrances and exits and maintain a position at the outside entry points  
  • Deter undesirable activity outside of the building by providing a firm and respectful presence and by contacting other authorities as needed.  
  • Open and close Museum entrances and exits, as well as the gates in Museum Park, caged playground
  • Patrol the external Museum surroundings, including Museum Park and Museum Parking Garage 
  • Engage with the transient population in our park making sure San Diego city park rules are followed
  • Work closely with San Diego’s Clean & Safe program and SDPD RSVP volunteers to proactively manage  any transients outside the Museum 
  • Respond to evacuations or emergency situations, both outside and inside the Museum
  • Document incidents and injuries that occur and provide first aid as needed 
  • Make periodic rounds of all three levels of the Museum, appropriately responding to visitor and staff safety needs and ensuring adherence to safety policies and/or communicating installation integrity requirements 
  • Maintain a constant awareness of Museum rules, procedures and policies while modeling an impeccable level of integrity for visitors, staff, vendors, and other guests.
  • Restock inventory at first-aid locations 
  • Be familiar with the closed-circuit TV and fire alarm systems 
  • Provides assistance with event load in/load out 
  • May be asked to work evenings based on operational needs 
  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements:
Education & Experience: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent  
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience in security and customer relations 
  • Current Guard Certification 
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification  
  • Must successfully complete a background check  
  • Provide proof of COVID-19 Vaccination and booster (if eligible)

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, talk, see and hear.  The employee is required to stand and walk for up to three to five hours at a time. The employee may need to climb and crawl,  sometimes in dark or confined spaces (Museum installations). The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move up to 50 pounds. Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors with changes in weather to include high heat or cold temperatures with constant ambient noise levels.
