Job Title: Director of Laboratory

Job Description:

This role involves planning, organizing, and directing the duties of laboratory personnel in cooperation with the Director of Laboratories. The Director ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care, maintains compliance with industry standards, and fosters positive relationships with medical staff and other departments.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Laboratory Management:
    • Plan and organize laboratory operations, clearly delineating duties and responsibilities of laboratory personnel.
    • Conduct bi-annual reviews of procedure manuals and monthly reviews of quality control, maintenance, and function checks.
    • Assess the competency of high-complexity testing personnel as needed.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Ensure the quality and appropriateness of patient care provided by the Laboratory in collaboration with the Medical Director of the Laboratory.
    • Monitor laboratory performance to detect and report unusual conditions to the Director.
  • Medical Staff Relations:
    • Actively strive to maintain positive relationships with the medical staff, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Personnel Management:
    • Manage laboratory staff, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and professional development.
  • Financial Management:
    • Oversee the financial management of the Laboratory and Pathology Departments, including budgeting, cost control, and financial planning.
    • Develop and execute a strategic plan to ensure the financial health and operational efficiency of the departments.
  • Interdepartmental Relations:
    • Actively develop and maintain positive working relationships with other departments to ensure seamless coordination of care.
  • Professional Development:
    • Stay current with advances in Laboratory and Pathology medicine and management by attending relevant seminars and meetings.
    • Implement new techniques, technologies, and best practices in the laboratory.
  • Patient Care:
    • Provide age-appropriate care to all patients, ensuring that laboratory services meet the specific needs of diverse patient populations.
Minimum Education:
  • Master's degree with at least 4 years of relevant experience, or
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience, or
  • HEW certification with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
Required Skills:
  • Strong critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively in a stressful environment and take appropriate action when necessary.
  • High degree of professional excellence characterized by sound independent judgment, reliability, initiative, flexibility, and strong ethics.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions based on in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, instruments, and their interrelationships.
  • Proficiency in performing routine analysis with high levels of competency and timeliness.
  • Completion of management classes is desirable.
Minimum Work Experience:
  • Proven experience in laboratory management with a history of professional excellence.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to manage personnel, financials, and strategic planning.
  • Experience in making informed decisions based on comprehensive knowledge of laboratory operations and patient care standards.
