Job Summary

Responsible for performing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures. Properly operate MRI equipment, ensuring professional interaction and communication with the patient/family, center staff, referring providers/staff, and radiologists. Responsible for assisting with training newly hired MRI technologists. Maintains operation of all MRI equipment.

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform MRI procedures.
  • Perform general radiography procedures.
  • Responsible for performing IVs on patients as necessary for contrast studies.
  • Perform i-Stat creatinine testing.
  • Proactively assess, identify, and respond to the needs of the patient for adjustment or intervention to optimize patient care, image quality, and patient experience. This includes positioning, physiology, procedure preparation, and technical factors. Modify technical factors to achieve desired imaging results and recognize complications and limitations associated with certain procedures.
  • Identify opportunities for corrective action and process improvement, providing recommendations and contributing to the department for quality and safety. Report “near misses” and errors promptly to improve processes and identify trends. Utilize critical thinking skills to observe and proactively address patient reactions (i.e., contrast media and medications) or potential outcomes, as appropriate.
  • Verify hardcopy/electronic orders and ensure correct procedures are being performed.
  • Welcome and escort patients to the dressing room, explain procedures, and answer patient questions.
  • Screen patients or any other individuals who enter the MRI room for metal, implants, and other safety hazards.
  • Screen for pregnant patients, properly position patients to ensure that the result will be the highest quality images.
  • Assign exams and finalize procedures to the correct radiologist in the corresponding system, i.e., RIS, PACS.
  • Maintain accurate patient history and other medical records including, but not limited to, QC logs and service records.
  • Ensure proper handling of STAT exams.
  • Practice infectious control procedures and ensure overall safety practices at all times.
  • Oversee maintenance and provide troubleshooting of MRI equipment to include monitoring and ensuring appropriate helium levels; ensure use of equipment consistent with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Track, order, and maintain MRI-related medical supplies, e.g., film, CDs, cleaning supplies, needles, tape, etc.
  • Stock and maintain linens properly.
  • Open/close clinics including the activation/deactivation of alarms.
  • Keep up with and ensure own work schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including administrative backup and support.

Educational and Skills Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as an MRI Technologist.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Radiographer preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer knowledge.
  • High School graduate; BS degree preferred.
  • Graduation from an ARRT-approved school of Radiologic Technology, either college or hospital affiliate (or state equivalent).
  • Registered with the ARRT or ARMRIT (or state equivalent).
  • Certified by the State of Texas to practice and administer radiation preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, outpatient imaging procedures.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of office computer systems directly related to the job function.
  • Ability to multi-task and remain detailed and organized.
  • Ability to communicate and respond to questions in a professional and knowledgeable manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Bilingual English-Spanish preferred.

  • Continually utilize visual acuity to operate equipment, read technical information, and/or use a keyboard.

  • Must have dependable transportation and the ability to travel.
