ABOUT VISIT SEATTLE 

 

For over half a century, Visit Seattle has stood as the premier destination marketing organization for Seattle and King County, operating as a 501(c)6 entity. Its mission is to bolster the region's economic and social growth by promoting it as a global destination. This is achieved through effective destination branding and launching competitive initiatives and campaigns focused on growing leisure travel, convention sales, and international tourism development. 


FUNDING 

 

Visit Seattle's financial support comes from a variety of sources. These include revenue from the Seattle Tourism Improvement Area hotel assessment, a contract for services paid by lodging taxes collected by the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle and King County, contributions from Visit Seattle's dynamic membership program, its marketing efforts, service contracts with the government, and other miscellaneous income. The organization's current operating budget stands at $38 million, primarily funded by the Seattle Tourism Improvement Area (two-thirds), the Seattle Convention Center (one-quarter), and other revenues as mentioned above. 


MEMBERSHIP 

 

Visit Seattle is a membership-based organization, linking more than 750 local businesses with the profitable visitor market. These businesses benefit from the exposure of their products and services to this audience. Additionally, Visit Seattle's Membership team organizes four “signature” events annually, alongside orientations and networking opportunities, and facilitating connections and growth within the community. 


POSITION SUMMARY 

 

The Chief Financial Officer will lead the financial strategy and management of Visit Seattle. This executive role is responsible for overseeing all financial functions including accounting, budgeting, financial planning and reporting; interface with Visit Seattle’s Treasurer, the finance committee, board of directors, STIA advisory board and Seattle Convention Center leadership; captain the annual audit process; and liaise with the City of Seattle’s treasury department. The Chief Financial Officer will ensure that Visit Seattle's financial practices support its mission and help it thrive in a competitive market. This role demands a leader with both strategic vision and practical financial skills, capable of excellent people leadership, managing complex budgets and providing financial insights and forecasts to guide the organization's decisions and effectiveness. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

  • Develop and oversee the financial strategy of Visit Seattle, ensuring alignment with its overall strategic goals. 
  • Lead the finance team in managing day-to-day financial operations, including accounting, payroll, budgeting, and monthly financial closing processes. 
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports and present them to the President & CEO, Visit Seattle Board of Directors, Seattle Tourism Improvement Area Advisory Board, and finance committee. 
  • Implement and maintain rigorous financial controls and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. 
  • Drive the annual budgeting process and provide financial forecasts to support inclusive business planning and decision-making. 
  • Act as a financial advisor to the President & CEO and board members, offering insights and recommendations on financial planning, risk management, and resource allocation. 
  • Applying managerial accounting practices, collaborate with department heads responsible for budgetary sections to develop financial models and metrics that drive efficiency, cost reduction, and overall financial health of the organization. 
  • Lead audit preparation and communication with the audit team, including involvement in preparing the annual 990 return. 
  • Engage directly with the finance to enhance internal accounting expertise. 
  • Foster strong relationships with external stakeholders including banks, auditors, vendors, and partners, to ensure the organization's financial interests are well represented and protected. 
  • Oversee our resource investment strategy and manage organizational funds to ensure financial health and sustainability. 
  • Lead financial negotiations on behalf of Visit Seattle, including contracts, partnerships, and other strategic initiatives. 
  • Champion continuous improvement in financial processes and systems, particularly embracing and leading the technology side of the department. 


TOP PRIORITIES 

 

  1. Cultivate strong connections with internal stakeholders, such as department heads and others who manage financial resources. Quickly develop working knowledge of our teams in marketing, convention sales & services, communications, memberships, destination services, and operations to ensure a foundation of trust and cooperation across all levels of Visit Seattle. 
  2. Build and maintain trusting relationships with the three key boards that provide funding and governance for Visit Seattle: the STIA Advisory Board, the Seattle Convention Center Public Facilities District Board, and the Visit Seattle Board. 
  3. Facilitate an inclusive, effective budgeting process for 2025. 


QUALIFICATIONS 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. A master’s degree or CPA is preferred. 
  • Minimum of 15 years of finance experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, preferably within a non-profit, tourism, or related sector. 
  • Preferred system experience with Sage Intacct and BILL Spend & Expense (formerly Divvy). 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute financial strategy and manage financial operations effectively. 
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and manage a high-performing team. 
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills. 
  • In-depth knowledge of financial regulations and accounting principles, including experience leading clean audits 
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with a variety of stakeholders. 
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Visit Seattle and a passion for promoting tourism.
