Schedule: Monday-Friday 32 hours/week

Under the general direction of the Shelter Supervisor, plans and implements developmental screenings and activities for children and parents in the shelters.

Accountabilities:
  • Conduct a developmental screening on each child age 0-5 years of age that enter the shelters. Collaborate with parents, case manager, counselor, and child advocates regarding services.
  • Work with children and parents individually and in group settings to enhance developmental skills. Provide a solution-oriented approach to problems and concerns including non-violent discipline methods.
  • Document assessment, family history and progress regarding developmental and behavioral issues of child. Follow up with clients and continue provision of service as appropriate.
  • Coordinate community resources and refers clients to subsequent services. Maintain professional contact with community resources and advocates client needs. Report suspicions of abuse or neglect.
  • Conduct life skills classes for families as needed addressing topics relevant to their roles as parents and/or care givers of children.
  • Complete all documentation relevant to role as Early Childhood Specialist in a timely manner.

Requirements:

  • Education
    • Graduate degree in Early Childhood or Early Childhood Special Education.
  • Certification, Recertification, Registration, or License
    • Class C driver's license, motor vehicle, and insurance required.
  • Experience
    • Experience or training in early childhood education and developmental assessments. Experience with domestic violence, economically disadvantaged, or other social issues.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Able to use a personal computer via mouse and keyboard, familiarity with windows and Microsoft products.
  • Exposures
    • Controlled inside work environment with noise/vibrations from general office equipment.
    • Frequent exposure to other environments such as schools, doctor offices, etc.
    • Minimal exposures to fumes/dust/odors.

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Work Type: Light, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Climbing/Balancing/Freedom to Move: May be assigned to multilevel building with some floors accessible by stairs only. Minimal required moving about the office. Sit about 25 percent of the time.
  • Stooping/Bending: Regularly
  • Reaching: Occasional, overhead as well as horizontal and down.
  • Vision: Adequate to perform essential functions.
  • Color Vision: No particular color vision requirement.
  • Hearing: Frequently perceive nature of sounds by ear.
  • Speech: Frequently express ideas by means of spoken words.
  • Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Frequently operates equipment requiring moderate ability.
  • Manual Dexterity: Frequently operates equipment requiring moderate ability.
