JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Girl Scouts Senior Accountant safeguards the resources and reputation of the council by directing and coordinating the organization’s accounting functions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Reconciling sub-ledger to general ledger account balances
  • Preparing financial statements
  • Supporting month-end and year-end close
  • Preparing financial statements, journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Assessing internal controls, including risk assessments and reviews of risk areas
  • Assisting with budget preparation and preparing the monthly budget variance analyses
  • Maintaining and reconciling fixed assets schedules
  • Assisting with initial internal control evaluations
  • Supervising accounting staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Operational Excellence

  • Maintains control over the general ledger and accounting information systems.
  • Oversees financial close of periods and preparation of financial statements; prepares and distributes budget vs. actual performance reports to council leadership staff; investigates and resolves transactions impacting the close.
  • Oversees sales tax return filings.
  • Manages payroll processing through third party vendor.
  • Assists Chief Financial Officer in maintaining internal controls to assure sound fiscal responsibility.
  • Maximizes the efficient use of information and technology.
  • Partners with Chief Financial Officer to develop new processes and procedures for improved efficiency throughout the Council.

Council Guidance and Impact

  • Oversee the monitoring of grant funding fiscal requirements, track spending and compliance, and submit the financial reporting to grant funders.
  • Oversight of accounts payable processing, and issuing of payments to vendors.
  • Assists with the annual budgeting process.
  • Provides technical support for both internal and external users of council’s financial data.
  • Provides training in accounting systems as needed.
  • Provides banking and financial management support to troop and service unit volunteers.
  • Contribute to senior leadership team by sharing expertise and demonstrating enterprise wide decision making pertaining to budget development and management.
  • Serves as lead during the annual external audit and ensures timely resolution of audit requests and findings.

Team Leadership & Accountability

  • Provides direction and support services for all accounting department functions including accounts receivable and accounts payable, product sales, and retail sales.
  • Create and manage departmental budget.
  • Enable staff. Provide staff with the tools, training and coaching that lead to success in the role.
  • Engage staff. Foster individual and team pride in achieving assigned goals and contributing to the Girl Scout mission.
  • Energize staff. Build a work environment that is motivating and respectful. Seek and deliver professional development opportunities based on the staff member’s capacity and interest.
  • Participates in supervisory conferences and staff meetings and attends council meetings as assigned.

  • Meeting individual and council strategic goals as measured by timely, compliant, and mission oriented accounting practices.
  • Adherence to the work plan and best practices of the council, while raising new ideas and alternative process recommendations to the CFO.
  • Personal commitment to regulatory and council practices.
  • Influence the ability and engagement of staff and volunteers by oversight or participation in their planning, training and coaching.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • 3 to 5 years accounting experience required, to include expertise in accounting systems, financial reporting, and auditing.
  • Proficiency with GL accounting, banking, A/R, A/P, month end journal entries and statements, payroll entries, year-end processes, and reporting.
  • Confidence and proficiency using Microsoft Office products and MIP Fund Accounting (Abila cloud version) or similar software is preferred.
  • Track record motivating staff to achieve a common goal and discover their best selves
  • Pride in achieving personal and team goals
  • Motivated by the Girl Scout mission
  • Engaging communication style, verbal and written. It would be great if you speak Spanish as well.
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this role, with our without accommodation, a person must be able to utilize basic office equipment including computers and phones.
