The Crisis Stabilization Center in Hampton City County, Virginia, is a vital part of the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board. Since 1971, we have provided a comprehensive continuum of high-quality, essential, and community-based services to citizens of the Peninsula affected by mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. Our inpatient service is a psychiatric hospital specializing in crisis intervention and suicide prevention, offering various treatment options and psychiatric emergency walk-in services. Our center caters specifically to young adults, helping them navigate mental health issues to return to a happy and healthy life.
About the Psychiatric Technician Role: The Regional Crisis Stabilization Unit (RCSU) is licensed by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) for Crisis Stabilization Services. Our 11-bed residential crisis stabilization and ambulatory detox program provides a 24-hour residential alternative to acute psychiatric hospitalization. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, we offer rapid access to brief intervention through psychiatry, nursing, therapy, psychoeducation, peer recovery supports, a structured milieu, and comprehensive care coordination.
As a Psychiatric Technician, you will be responsible for providing direct care and supervision of individuals who are living with a serious mental illness (SMI) and/or have a co-occurring substance use disorder in an intensive short-term residential crisis stabilization program. You will assist the interdisciplinary team in providing direct service treatment and case coordination, monitor and document client progress, and support the overall treatment goals of the program.
Community Served: Adults aged 18 - 64
Program Operation: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Good knowledge of serious mental health disorders and the principles and practices relating to the care of individuals with these disorders.
- Demonstrated skill in working with adults with behavioral health, substance use, or co-occurring disorders.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, families, employers, and other service provider staff.
- Ability to evaluate and interpret behavioral observations.
- Ability to follow active treatment schedules.
- Knowledge of federal and state local support services and laws governing clients' rights and confidentiality of records.
- Proficiency in the use of computers.
Psychiatric Technician Requirements: One (1) year direct care experience working with adults living with a Serious Mental Illness (SMI). Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
