Veterinary Anesthesia Technician

Position Overview: Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Veterinary Anesthesia Technician to join our team. As a Veterinary Anesthesia Technician, you will be crucial in ensuring the safe and effective administration of anesthesia to canine and feline patients undergoing medical procedures. We value expertise, professionalism, and a strong commitment to providing exceptional patient care. The ideal candidate will have a Veterinary Technician certification (CVT, LVT, or RVT) and at least 3 years of experience in veterinary anesthesia.

Responsibilities:

  • Anesthesia Monitoring: Utilize advanced monitoring equipment to closely monitor canine and feline patients before, during, and after anesthesia administration. Ensure vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and temperature, are within safe parameters.

  • Anesthesia Administration: Prepare and administer anesthetic drugs under the supervision of veterinarians, ensuring accurate dosages and the use of proper techniques. Maintain and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment.

  • Patient Assessment: Perform thorough pre-anesthetic evaluations, including physical examinations and review of medical history, to develop individualized anesthesia protocols for each patient.

  • Anesthesia Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed anesthesia records, documenting medications administered, vital signs, observations, and any complications during anesthesia.

  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other team members to plan and coordinate anesthesia protocols and patient care during surgical procedures.

  • Emergency Response: Recognize and respond swiftly to emergencies or complications during anesthesia, implementing appropriate measures to stabilize the patient.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean, sterilize, and maintain anesthesia equipment, ensuring optimal functioning and readiness for use. Follow proper protocols for maintenance and calibration of monitoring equipment.

  • Training and Education: Stay abreast of current advancements in veterinary anesthesia techniques and participate in continuing education opportunities. Provide training and guidance to veterinary staff regarding anesthesia protocols and best practices.

  • Compliance and Safety: Adhere to all veterinary medical regulations, safety protocols, and hospital policies to ensure the well-being and comfort of patients undergoing anesthesia.

Qualifications:

  • Veterinary Technician Certification: Must hold a valid Veterinary Technician certification (CVT, LVT, or RVT).

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Veterinary Anesthesia Technician in a veterinary hospital or specialty practice.

  • Knowledge and Skills: In-depth understanding of veterinary anesthesia techniques, anesthesia equipment, and monitoring procedures. Proficiency in using advanced monitoring equipment and troubleshooting anesthesia-related issues.

  • Attention to Detail: Keen observation skills and the ability to closely monitor vital signs, detect changes, and address complications during anesthesia administration.

  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other team members. Ability to provide clear instructions and information to pet owners regarding anesthesia protocols and post-anesthetic care.

  • Critical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions during emergencies.

  • Organization and Recordkeeping: Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate documentation and recordkeeping.

  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, lift, and restrain canine and feline patients for extended periods, as required.

  • Compassion: Genuine care for the well-being and comfort of canine and feline patients undergoing anesthesia, providing them with compassionate care throughout their surgical journey.
