Summary of Position:


The Senior Director of Programs provides administrative leadership and guidance to the programs and works with the Chief Program Officer to ensure the operational success of all departments.


In performing the duties and responsibilities of this position, the Senior Director of Programs position will demonstrate adherence to NHH’s core values through:

Essential Responsibilities:


• Assist with the startup and implementation of new and/or modified programs within the Permanent Supportive Housing, Rapid Rehousing, Emergency Shelter, and Outreach programs.

• Collaborative to design and implement appropriate training for the program staff.

• Conduct scheduled and unscheduled program site visits to assist Program Directors with compliance with agency and funder guidelines.

• Maintain regular communication with the Chief Program Officer/Executive Director on issues involving the community, programs, clients, and other stakeholders.

• Contribute to the strategic planning initiative of the Executive Director’s leadership.

• Participate in organization-wide meetings and committees, departmental meetings, and training as needed.

• Conduct regular and ongoing evaluations of program needs.

• Develop and implement plans to close identified gaps in service (ex. Professional development, licensing requirements) in coordination with the Chief Program Officer/Executive Director.

• Ensure monthly reports per contract are, are completed and sent to our contract funders (BNL meeting reports, ESG reports, HMIS).

• Maintain flexible hours to be available for evening meetings, events, and grievance follow up.

• Collaborate with the Program Directors about client grievances that require follow up.

• Provides program management and leadership during the absence of the Chief Program Officer.

• Collaborate with the Program Directors to create program policies and procedures, program manuals, and a training manual for program positions.

• Maintain fluid communication with external stakeholders and funders in Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria Counties.

• Participate in the agency’s Senior Team.

• Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:


• Master’s Degree in a human services discipline preferred and at least 1 year of supervisory experience.

• A bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, criminal justice, or another human service discipline is required, combined with at least two years of supervisory experience.

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with a focus on one of the following areas: mental health, physical health, addictions, aging, trauma, and homelessness.

• Knowledge of Virginia’s social services resources and compliance requirements and HUD housing programs and expectations.

• Strong cultural competence, including excellent interactions and communication ability with a diverse population.

• Mature abilities in developing interpersonal relations, communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.

• Ability to multi-task with strong organizational skills

• Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to learn the Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS).

• Ability to work independently and as a team member.

• Strong negotiating skills.

• Ability to interact with a multi-disciplinary group of internal and external stakeholders.
