POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Director of Finance manages the overall accounting function, including general ledger postings, reconciliations and reporting. This person also supervises payroll, ensures preparation of complete and accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP, and assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget. The Director of Finance trains staff and administers approved accounting policies and procedures throughout the YMCA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Hires, trains, supervises and manages accounting personnel including accounts payable and payroll.
  2. Maintains an accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets and liabilities of the YMCA for all funds. Also maintains systems to track all data required for disclosure in the audited financial statements.
  3. Serves as resource to management and program personnel in all matters relating to accounting, cash receipts and cash disbursements.
  4. Prepares reconciliations of all YMCA banking, investment and financial asset accounts on a monthly basis.
  5. Prepares financial statements required by management, the Board, and outside agencies.
  6. Oversees grant reporting and compliance with State of Connecticut Day Care Grants.
  7. In coordination with the external auditors compiles information for the IRS Form 990 tax return.
  8. Leads the annual independent audit and works closely with external auditors to resolve issues.
  9. Develops and maintains key relationships, including with auditors, investment advisors, banks and vendors.
  1. Monitor investment activity and coordinates asset allocation changes and updates with external investment management consultants.
  2. Manages operating cash flow including insuring timely payment to vendors and to project cash flow requirements throughout the year.
  3. Conducts special internal audits, accounting studies, analyses and cost studies as required. Provides recommendations.
  4. Works closely with IT staff to ensure that computer and software systems provide accurate information and adequate internal controls.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent.
  • Understanding of and experience in GAAP are required.
  • Five years of experience or more in a supervisory accounting role.
  • Experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.
  • Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems.
  • Ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems. Excellent spreadsheet skills are critical.
  • CPA or similar accounting certification preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods at a time.
  • Use hands and fingers to manipulate keys on keyboard.
  • Frequently required to stand, talk and hear.
