Overview

The Chaplain I, under the direction of the Chaplain Director/Manager, provides support to patients and families from all spiritual, religious and humanistic paths, as well as FMC staff. S/he may provide services to pediatric, adolescent, adults, geriatric patients, and their families.

The Chaplain II position performs all of the Chaplain I duties and further acts as a team lead for the Chaplains and Native Healer. This position provides assistance in more complex situations involving service recovery, de-escalation and support during Trigger Red and disaster events. This role provides team assignments and provides orientation, feedback, and mentorship to the team and supports team processes, policies and goals.

This position's primary work location is Onsite.


Responsibilities

Spiritual Care
* Provides a calming and supportive presence at all times.

* Present with patients, patients’ family, and caregivers during the end of life situations.

* Assesses patients/families for spiritual care needs matching needs with spiritual care and appropriate support.

* Provides supportive spiritual care to people facing a personal crisis ( death of a child, suicide, drug overdose, mental health issues, drug and alcohol dependency, serious illness and acute trauma) to patients, families, and staff.

* Provides spiritual care assessment and support, as a member of the Palliative Care Team.

* Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams for patient/family support and service recovery.

* Trains and supports relief Chaplains, Chaplain Assistants, Native Healer and volunteers.

* Serves as Chaplain Services team member; collaborates and shares information to enhance patient care.

* Demonstrates the ability to provide appropriate spiritual care to all people.

* Shares on-call and holiday coverage.


Palliative Care Team
* Attend Palliative Care rounds and meetings.

* Documents in EMR to provide information that addresses patient and family spiritual care issues to assist Palliative Care team in providing comprehensive supportive care.

* Provides sacramental support upon request.


Operations
* Attends mandatory Chaplain Service quarterly meetings.

* Participates in team meetings, ongoing training and collaboration and process improvement.

* Participates as an interdisciplinary team member, integrates goals and insights from the team, identifies spiritual care plan and goals, and documents and maintains shared resources.


Chaplain II Team Leadership
* Lead, mentor and guide the team on the shift with respect to approaching challenges and/or traumatic situations, helping to enforce healthy and appropriate boundaries, when and how to escalate situations and directing priorities for the days.

* Assist with scheduling, communicating and tracking compliance with modules, various senior team initiatives, and important information regarding process and policies and assists with training of the team.

* Provides team assignments and direction as a team lead. Provides constructive feedback to team members to support consistent and effective Spiritual Care according to team processes, policies and goals.

* Consistently follows all department processes and policies, is available to assist with service recovery, de-escalation and support during Trigger Red or internal disasters, and as needed by visitors and volunteers.

* Documents appropriately services rendered in the EMR and reviews documentation of other team members, providing constructive feedback as needed.

* Demonstrates leadership on the team with respect to all NAH policies and initiatives and provides leadership for the team in all areas of HIPAA, Safety, Compliance, and Infection Prevention, ensuring all team members on the shift are complying with these policies and the general policies of the department.

* Ensures comprehensive hand-off and fulfillment of all team duties at end of each shift, providing leadership, direction and support to other team members.

* Demonstrated ability to appropriately to de-escalate situation and/or refer situations to Director, Patient Experience, Administrator in Charge, Security, RN or Charge RN.

* Mature discernment on how to hand issues at entry doors, visitation in general, responding to Trauma calls, Code Red/Disaster Triage when approaching or at capacity, especially since patients share information with the chaplain that should be addressed by others, such a domestic violence, elder neglect, a sense of being treated poorly inpatient, fears, etc.,, and understanding when to refer situations to others or proceed with de-escalation.

* Aware of and deploys various resources to support patients/families (i.e. meal card, Taylor House, collaborating with care team, exceptions to visitation within restrictions and able to demonstrate NAH values and turn situations around by explaining the "why".


Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.

* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.


Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or GED- Required

Graduate theological, divinity, or pastoral care degree seminary or university accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS)- Preferred


Certification & Licensures
Ministerial Standing, oversight or equivalent with recognized ecclesiastical body (National Conference on Ministry to Armed Forces or by the Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches)- Preferred


Experience
Chaplain I:
Minimum 3 years' experience providing spiritual care to people of many different faiths and secular values.- Required

Experience providing spiritual care in hospital setting to people from a variety of faith, cultural and socially diverse backgrounds- Strongly preferred

Formalized spiritual or pastoral care training provided by faith community or ecclesiastical body- Required

Spiritual care education, experience and or training directly related to issues of death and dying- Required

Conversational in Spanish or Navajo, Sign Language or second language- Preferred

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
