This is an opportunity to join a company that provides pathology services. We are looking for a full time accessioner/grossing technician. The position will be responsible for setting up and grossing incoming specimens before processing. Attention to detail, organization and accuracy are key components as this role impacts every sample entering the lab.

Location: Houston, TX (Medical Center area)

Key Job Functions

  • Grossing dermatologic and other small tissue specimens after adequate training and medical director approval. This involves following detailed procedures and protocols for inspecting specimens, describing and measuring tissue, inking if needed, and sectioning tissue to be processed
  • Maintaining supplies for accessioning and grossing area
  • Performing quality checks to verify the accuracy of materials and data entered into our laboratory information system
  • Professionally managing issues if they arise and communicating with staff both inside the laboratory and in other facilities to ensure patient care and the highest level of client service
  • Utilizing Microsoft office programs, electronic medical records and other manual methods as necessary to perform job functions or gather information
  • Sorting cases according to pre-determined standards while paying close attention to each detail
  • Accessioning and tracking incoming samples, which includes reviewing and verifying paperwork and information and entering data into our laboratory information system. Within this function, keeping a detailed account of information provided, consistency, discrepancies and ensuring all cases meet certain requirements to be entered accurately
  • Printing and setting up materials used in the histology process
  • Scanning, uploading, and logging information and documents

  • Be flexible with schedule; some days may be longer or shorter depending on amount of cases and work may be needed outside of scheduled hours
  • Be willing and able to learn new skills and take on additional responsibility

  • At times, handle multiple responsibilities and tasks simultaneously
  • Write and type efficiently and accurately
  • Work proficiently with computers and computer programs (including LIS system), the internet and office equipment
  • Maintain client confidence and protecting operations by keeping information confidential and complying with HIPAA requirements

Education and Experience:

Required: Meet the Clia ‘88 requirements for specimen grossing which may require either

(1) having earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or

(2) having earned at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either (a) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or (b) 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination

Preferred:

Experience with specimen accessioning and grossing

Compensation:

Competitive and commensurate with education, experience and qualifications

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour
