SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for providing care to patients undergoing Mohs surgery and related dermatologic procedures under the supervision of Mohs Surgeons, Mohs Surgical Managers and Lead Medical Assistants. Duties include, but are not limited to setting up rooms, rooming patients, taking vitals, assisting during surgery, patient education, wound care, verifying medical history, and submitting information into the electronic medical record (EMR). Travel is required between our Providence, East Providence, and South County sites.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare exam and/or treatment rooms with necessary equipment and supplies for examination and treatment.
  • Prepare patients for examination and/or treatment. Document patient’s medical history, medication reconciliation and current dermatological condition.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and verbal communications with all other health team members regarding any pertinent clinical issues and follow-up with patient per order of the provider. Document all communications in the EMR.
  • Set up patient for surgery including setting up sterile tray, reviewing pre-surgical questions, prepping the surgical site, obtaining vital signs, and positioning the patient.
  • Directly assists Mohs surgeon during Mohs surgical procedures and anticipates surgeon’s needs. Assist during general dermatological surgical procedures, biopsies, and excisions.
  • Clean and bandage surgical site
  • Educate patients on wound care and post-op procedures.
  • Correctly document surgical information on the Mohs Map (i.e., suture type, closure type, closure length etc.)
  • Maintains sterile technique as appropriate – ensures safe handling of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Drawing up medications, such as lidocaine, using the appropriate technique.
  • Maintain, stock and clean examination rooms. Test equipment per protocol.
  • Clean and prepare instruments and surgical trays for autoclave. Perform necessary autoclave testing.
  • Chart preparation for the upcoming surgical week.
  • Assist in cosmetic procedure preparation such as Botox, filler injections, laser treatments, and chemical peels.
  • Participates as an active member of the care team and assumes duties/responsibilities to facilitate ongoing care coordination, follow-up, and reporting/documentation to improve clinical outcomes.
  • Display a strong sense of teamwork in daily interactions with all internal and external members of the care team.
  • Reduce inquiries to others when information is readily available through other means.
  • Willingly learns new skills, procedures, protocols as they are introduced; attends training and masters new software programs.
  • Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary.
  • Minimize non-productive time and fill slow periods with activities that will enable you to prepare to meet future needs of the office (organizing, stocking, housekeeping, assisting others, scanning, chart preparation etc.).
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  • Maintain all licensures / certifications / OSHA training.
  • May perform duties of Medical Secretary.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to perform duties wherever volume deems it necessary within the office.
  • Demonstrates the ability to foresee and adjust work hours to avoid overtime.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Travel between sites required.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program or one year experience gained through prior employment in a medical practice.
  • National certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of dermatological examination, diagnostic and/or treatment procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions necessary to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ability to read, speak and understand (both orally and in writing) English.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate appropriately.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with patients, physicians, supervisor and peers.
  • Ability to access or retrieve clinical information in EMR and scan in any pertinent information.

EXPERIENCE:

Prefer a minimum of one-year experience working in a dermatology setting. Prefer experience with EMR software and medical scheduling software. Prior Mohs or surgical experience a plus.
