Employment Coordinator

La Verne, United States Institute for Ecological Civilization Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

WHO WE ARE

The Institute for Ecological Civilization (EcoCiv) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that promotes civilizational change for the long-term wellbeing of people and the planet. EcoCiv works internationally to design and scale solutions toward long-term sustainability, currently focusing on water, economies, and food systems. We conduct research, convene experts, and facilitate the identification and scaling of transformative solutions to key global issues. We then help implement solutions through engagement at local and global levels. Other activities include consultations, think-tank gatherings, and policy engagement.

THE POSITION

EcoCiv is ready to hire a local full-time, non-exempt Employment Coordinator for the new Pomona Jobs Program (PJP). This job creation and training program is a partnership between EcoCiv and the Latino/a Roundtable and is funded by the City of Pomona. The Employment Coordinator will work primarily to secure commitments from area employers to hire participants in the Pomona Jobs Program, with a focus on Pomona's "anchor institutions": hospitals, colleges, city schools, and city government. He/she will work with area employers and stakeholders to increase the number of local residents whom they interview, with the goal of reducing unemployment and underemployment in the region.

The successful candidate for this position will also work with Pomona Valley businesses, BIPOC-owned small businesses, and worker-owned cooperatives. In addition to securing employment opportunities, he/she will collaborate closely with a full-time Community Organizer, who identifies job candidates and coordinates training. Each of the two full-time staff will also manage a predicted caseload of 15-20 beneficiaries of the program at any given time, many of whom are Spanish-speaking. While some of the work can be done remotely, over half the time will be onsite in the Pomona area.

The ideal candidate will have two types of qualifications. (1) They will have some training and/or experience working with businesses and with workforce development. (2) They will also have experience mentoring and supporting unemployed and underemployed individuals as they receive training and move into the job force. The Pomona Jobs Program endorses the principles of California's "High Road Training Partnership" approach, emphasizing employment opportunities that support the personal and financial wellbeing of employees and their dependents.

Because applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis, interested candidates are encouraged to submit their materials at their earliest convenience. Successful applicants will be asked to supply the names of three professional references who can be reached by phone at the appropriate time in the search process. This is a grant-funded position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Developing job placement partnerships (primary responsibility)

  • Overall field-based coordination of the components of the Pomona Jobs Program that depend on employers; able to represent the Program in attractive ways to employers, including describing the concept of a High Road Training Partnership (HRTP);
  • Identifies possible employers in the public and private sectors, with a particular emphasis on "anchor institution" employers. Evaluates potential matches between beneficiaries and employers;
  • Develops positive ongoing relationships with managers and HR officers who work for these potential employers; assesses job sites for beneficiary suitability;
  • Uses networks to develop new contacts; makes phone calls; arranges meetings with employers;
  • Works closely with job placement sites on behalf of the beneficiaries;
  • Identifies priorities and continually expands the network of potential employers;
  • Conducts follow-up interviews with cohort members who have been placed in employment;
  • Obtains commitments from anchor institutions in our region to interview a specific number of graduates from the PJP.

Beneficiary Engagement (secondary responsibility)

  • Manages a predicted caseload of 15-20 beneficiaries of the program at any given time;
  • Conducts pre-employment interviews with participants to determine skills and best fit;
  • Assists in conducting orientation sessions and in training beneficiaries based on employer expectations (in coordination with the Community Organizer);
  • Presents the program participants in positive ways to potential employers;
  • Conducts follow-up check-in meetings with program participants; seeks feedback on job placements;
  • Works with the Community Organizer to understand the needs of program participants; helps to locate job placements that are aligned with participants' needs;
  • Tracks data on beneficiary placement and assists in reporting these to the City.

Technical Support and Relationship Skills

  • Provides support for organizational funding efforts on an as-needed basis, including contributing to grant-writing efforts;
  • Contributes expertise in technical areas such as community and workforce development;
  • Works closely with and supports EcoCiv's partner organization, the Latino/a Roundtable.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree;
  • 2-3 years of experience in a related role;
  • Located within commutable distance to Pomona, California and able to work on-site multiple days per week;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Shares the vision of equitable workplaces with employers; Education, training, and/or experience in workforce development and urban economics (policies and practices), social work, or other relevant fields;
  • Experience working in economic development and with nonprofit organizations;
  • Proficiency with project management tools such as ClickUp, Slack, Google Drive/Suite, and Zoom.
  • Ability to conduct conversations in Spanish.

HOW TO APPLY

Submit your application via the link, including a cover letter detailing your qualifications and a resume or c.v. Finalist candidates will be asked to provide names and contact information for three professional references. Applications will be reviewed as received, and the job will remain open until filled. Applicants are encouraged to apply soon in order to be fully considered.
