POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director, Community Development is responsible for designing and implementing a community development strategy to activate spaces surrounding United Way’s catalytic investments and attract additional public, private, and philanthropic investments in Neighborhood Network communities on the South and West Sides of Chicago. The Director, Community Development role is a new community-facing position with no direct reports, and will collaborate with the Senior Director, Community Engagement on United Way’s place-based economic development efforts. The individual will also collaborate closely with senior leadership and the Community Impact, Resource Development, MarCom, and Partner Engagement teams, as well as other funders, companies, and government entities leading economic development initiatives across the region.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with community leaders to create community development plans that create opportunities that directly benefit residents of select United Way Neighborhood Network Communities.
  • Conduct property research and assess feasibility of real estate projects.
  • Advise community partners on securing capital, navigating zoning and permitting processes, and completing real estate projects.
  • Identify and build partnerships with nonprofits, community development corporations, entrepreneurs, community developers and other stakeholders with real estate projects adjacent to United Way catalytic investment projects.
  • Research investment models and trends to recommend creative funding strategies for projects.
  • Advise United Way senior leadership on promising investment opportunities and build presentations to secure funding.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage federal funding targeted at green economic development opportunities.
  • Collaborate closely with Senior Director, Community Engagement to ensure proposed real estate projects align with the Neighborhood Network’s Quality of Life Plan.
  • Identify potential joint investors and pro bono partners to support financing and completion of community development projects.
  • Build and manage relationships with community stakeholders and high-level United Way volunteers to advance community development projects.
  • Represent United Way and the Neighborhood Network initiative on panels, media appearances, and other efforts aimed at increasing visibility of the organization and its partners.
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the management team.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, community development or related field required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience managing economic development, urban planning, or real estate initiatives. Experience with nonprofit partners and or/community development corporations preferred.
  • Proven experience mobilizing sustainable, community-wide engagement efforts in the health and human services arena for low-income communities.
  • Highly organized, meticulous attention to detail, ability to multi-task, prioritize, delegate, and execute concurrent projects and day-to-day tasks within a fast-paced environment from inception to conclusion.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit, with the ability to work well independently and collaborate within a team.
  • Ability to take in significant amounts of information from various sources and distill key messages that create alignment and consensus internally and externally.
  • Strong presentation skills to various key stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Strong management, leadership, team building, problem solving, critical thinking, and judgment skills.
  • Strong communication skills, including substantive contributions to discussions, drawing upon expertise to amplify work quality.
  • Experience or familiarity with navigating local government and zoning requirements preferred.
  • Knowledge of and relationships within the Chicago community development, nonprofit, and philanthropic communities.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal car.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
