Position Summary:

The Math Interventionist provides targeted intervention instruction to Tier 2 and Tier 3 students in the area of mathematics. The Interventionist provides individual or small group instruction to students who are struggling academically in math. This position is also responsible for monitoring, reporting, and communicating student progress and performance. The Math Interventionist is part of the Student Support Team and reports to the Director of Student Support.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

The Math Interventionist is a 10-month position. Typical working hours are Mondays from 8:00am-4:30 pm and Tuesday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm. Responsibilities include the following:


INSTRUCTION AND INTERVENTION

  • Provide targeted math instruction and intervention to Tier 2 and Tier 3 students in grades PK3-Grade 6.
  • Use research-based interventions in response to individual student needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of lessons delivered, student follow-up work completed, and student attendance during sessions.
  • Conduct progress monitoring of students. 
  • Communicates with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress.
  • Participate in developing Child Study plans for students with math needs, and advise staff around data collection and interventions.
  • Prepare materials and lessons that meet the needs and interests of the children, are appropriate to their development and are based on Montessori philosophy and practice, best educational practices.
  • Communicate clearly and accurately with children, conveying clear expectations and managing student behavior positively, respectfully, and effectively.
  • Keep math support materials in good condition, maintain and grow the school’s resources for math interventions, and order new materials as needed, as determined by the budget.
  • Create an emotional climate that is warm and comfortable and in which children feel safe and nurtured and facilitate a cooperative learning community.


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Use most recent knowledge in the field to collaborate with the Academic Team in supporting the use of Montessori materials to drive math outcomes for children at all levels, particularly children with lagging skills.
  • Work with classroom and student support teams (during PD, Child Study, and office hours) on interpreting individual student math assessment scores to determine support strategies as needed.
  • Holds office hours to collaborate with teachers to provide insight and guidance as they create plans for differentiated instruction in the classroom for accommodations and learning extensions as necessary.
  • Support Professional Development of BMPCS faculty in the area of math.
  • Have/develop a clear understanding of the Montessori philosophy in practice, in particular when it comes to math materials and implementation
  • Keep up-to-date on current research on best practices for math instruction.
  • Set and accomplish realistic and meaningful annual goals in consultation with the principal.

Education and Experience:

  • Experience working with diverse populations of students, parents, and families. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master's degree in a relevant field preferred
  • Experience facilitating targeted small group/individual math intervention with primary and elementary-aged students
  • Experience working with students who have gaps in mathematics achievement 
  • Proven ability to foster strong student outcomes in the area of mathematics
  • Knowledge of differentiating mathematics instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability in using assessment data to inform instruction
  • Demonstrated understanding of adult learning strategies
  • Montessori training/experience preferred
