Job Description

AHRC NYC is currently seeking a School Principal to join their team at the AHRC Middle/HS.

Under the direction of the Education Department’s Director and/or Associate Director, the Principal ensures that the school provides a safe, productive learning environment of the highest quality and is aligned with NYS Common Core Learning Standards and Individual Educational Program mandates. In particular, the Principal serves as the school’s chief administrator in implementing policies, programs, and curriculum activities in a manner that promotes individualized educational development of each student, continued professional development of each staff member, effective partnering and communication with parents/family members, Department of Education liaisons, and other educational service providers, and overseeing the overall safety and soundness of facility operations.

Salary starting at $160k

Salary level will commensurate with experience

Essential Responsibilities

Educational Development:

  • Ensure curricula fully meets Common Core NYS Learning Standards and all learning activities adhere to agency’s teaching mission, philosophy and methods as directed towards students with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
  • Supervise instructional programs of school by evaluating and selecting curriculum materials and equipment, as well as by meeting regularly with Director and/or Associate Director to assess implementation and innovation of teaching methods.
  • Monitor delivery of all educational and related services as prescribed in each student’s Individualized Education Plan.
  • Oversee scheduling of related therapeutic services and review service-related notes for quality, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Develop and coordinate procedures for monitoring and evaluating student progress consistent with individual educational plans.
  • Provide coverage of classrooms when certified staff members are not present, as necessary.

Staff Development:

  • Provide overall leadership and supervision to teaching staff.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide appropriate coaching feedback to teaching staff based on these observations, as applicable.
  • Provide or coordinate on-site orientation for substitutes, student interns and volunteers and ensure appropriate assignments of these staff on ongoing basis.
  • Coordinate in-service programs to ensure appropriate expertise in meeting student needs and contribute technical assistance to teaching staff in implementing curriculum material and equipment.
  • Draft and deliver performance evaluations in accordance with agency and Department of Education requirements.

Stakeholder Relations:

  • Ensure consistent telephone or in-person contact with parents/family members, as needed.
  • Ensure timely and consistent interactions and serve as primary liaison with school district administrators, community groups, special education-related committees, Office of Pupil Transportation, and others to support and facilitate quality service provision in the school.
  • Attend and participate in CPSE/CSE/IFSP meetings, as well as interdisciplinary treatment meetings.

School Operations:

  • Provide decision-making in hiring, disciplining and terminating of staffing for the school.
  • Ensure that all requisite documentation related to school operations is completed in timely, accurate manner, including all regulatory and accounting paperwork, school attendance records, and staff attendance records.
  • Assist in developing and provide ongoing monitoring of school budget.
  • Coordinate oversight of safety and building maintenance operations of school.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters in Special Education, Permanent NYS Certification in Special Education and Certification as a School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS) or School Building Leader (SBL) required.
  • Supervisory and programmatic experience in a special education school setting and knowledge of state and local regulations required.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, as well as establish and maintain relationships, with individuals, family members, school district administrators and other external professional staff. 
  • Must have solid organizational and multi-tasking skills and proven ability to make independent decisions, set appropriate program priorities, and handle sensitive and/or stressful situations.
