The Tooling Manager leads tooling support functions, sample room and product samples, and staff in the modification and maintenance of production tools for all locations. Additional responsibilities include planning and evaluating department activities in order to continually improve all processes related to tooling activities and functions; Providing the optimum solutions to meet the needs of our customers, their markets, and the organization.


Essential Accountabilities

  1. Provide leadership and direction to all tooling department personnel to enable optimum contribution to the organization. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, firing, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  2. Lead and drive tooling technology expertise, advice, and consultation to all areas of the organization to maximize the design, build, performance, cost, and quality of tooling for all vertical markets.
  3. Maintain a safe work environment by establishing and enforcing the organization's safety standards, adhering to legal requirements, and monitoring team work activities.
  4. Complete tooling support activities and job functions by developing schedules, assigning, and monitoring work, gathering resources, implementing productivity standards, resolving tool production problems, maintaining reference materials, and document procedures & implement work instructions.
  5. Develop systems that support continuous improvement within the processes that support the areas of tooling, sample making, and related activities as well as improve speed to market and customer experience.
  6. Create and manage department and project budgets, minimize operating expenses, submit purchase requisitions, schedule expenditures, monitor and correct variances, and adhere to approved capital expenditures list related to tooling maintenance and support.
  7. Initiate and participate as an active member of teams working on special projects, and/or process improvement by providing expertise in the areas of tooling technology and support.
  8. Develop measurement systems to monitor tooling quality, on time metrics, and prototype samples lead-times.
  9. Responsible for the central training, revisions, and compliance of ISO clause 4.09.07.
  10. Communicate openly and practice a no-surprise approach with Executive Team.
  11. Lead and execute special large projects and other duties as assigned by Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Design or related field plus 6 years experience managing the design, fabrication & maintenance of tooling and 3 years of managerial/supervisory experience.

OR

Associate degree in Tool and Die Fabrication and 10 years of progressively complex and responsible experience with the design, fabrication and maintenance of tooling which has included 3 years of lead or supervisory experience.

OR

Journeyman Tool & Die Maker status with 10 years of progressively complex and responsible experience with the design, fabrication and maintenance of tooling which has included 3 years of lead or supervisory experience.


Desired Skills

  • General business coursework and ability to understand business concepts and processes.
  • Must have knowledge of Tool and Die Fabrication techniques and inspection instruments and standards.
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAM and state of the art tool manufacturing techniques.
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Leadership skills and ability to work as a member of a team on a broad range of process improvements.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and Project management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines.
  • General computer skills using MS Office Suite of products.
