Job Description

Summary/objective

The controller role is responsible for preparing and maintaining financial records to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. The position is responsible for compliance with all local, state, and federal guidelines related to payroll, taxes, worker’s compensation, and benefits. Actively plan and direct the accounting operations of the company and working closely with others and being supportive and cooperative while exhibiting the company’s core values.

Essential functions

  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles and financial reporting standards.
  • Recommends benchmarks that will be used to measure the company’s performance.
  • Produced the annual budget and forecasts; reports significant budget differences to management.
  • Provides financial analysis with emphasis on capital expenses, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
  • Reconciles cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; manages accounts receivable collections.
  • Verifies and/or completes payment of invoices associated with accounts payable and ensures payments are charged to the appropriate accounts.
  • Provides outside auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audit.
  • Files tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies.
  • Coordinates with software vendor to maintain accounting software systems; recommends updates to enhance the accounting software.
  • Manages the purchasing and invoicing system.
  • Maintains knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory responsibilities

The Controller will be responsible for those in the accounting department and the overall operations to include bookkeeping, AR and AP.

Work environment

This position primarily is completed in an office environment with some exposure to industrial environments. The use of PPE is required when working/visiting industrial environments.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

May be required to sit for extended periods of time while demonstrating manual dexterity to accurately work on the telephone, computer keyboard, and other equipment. Must be able to lift and carry 20 pounds in the form of boxes of supplies or product components.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle is required.

Travel required

Must be able and willing to travel away from home overnight when necessary.

Attendance at business meetings and conferences as a team representative.

Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and maintain to the Company’s sole satisfaction an insurable motor vehicle operating status.

Required education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business-related field or significant experience related to accounting principles.
  • Five or more years of related experience required.
