Job Summary:

The Collections Specialist is responsible for contacting customers to collect payments on overdue accounts. This role involves negotiating payment plans, processing payments, and maintaining detailed records of communication and transactions. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle difficult conversations professionally and empathetically.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Contact Customers:
    • Initiate contact with customers via phone, email, and mail to collect overdue payments.
    • Use skip tracing techniques to locate customers with outdated contact information.
  2. Negotiate Payment Plans:
    • Discuss payment options and negotiate payment plans that fit the customer’s financial situation.
    • Ensure payment plans are feasible and acceptable to both the customer and the company.
  3. Record Keeping:
    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all communications and transactions.
    • Update customer account information and status in the company’s database.
  4. Customer Service:
    • Address customer inquiries and concerns regarding their accounts.
    • Provide exceptional customer service while maintaining firm and professional communication.
  5. Compliance:
    • Adhere to all relevant federal and state laws, including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
    • Ensure all collection activities are performed ethically and legally.
  6. Performance Metrics:
    • Meet or exceed individual and team performance targets, such as collection rates and customer satisfaction scores.
  7. Reporting:
    • Prepare regular reports on collection activities, including success rates and outstanding balances.
    • Provide feedback and suggestions for improving collection processes and strategies.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in collections, customer service, or related field is an advantage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and difficult conversations.
  • Excellent negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in using computers and relevant software applications.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations (e.g., FDCPA).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly over the phone.

Work Environment:

  • Office setting with standard business hours.
  • May require occasional overtime or flexible hours based on business needs.
