General Job Summary:

The Locomotive Mechanic I/II/Hostler performs scheduled inspections and mechanical repair in the maintenance, modification, fabrication and outfitting of locomotives in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration and Company guidelines and checklists.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Observe safe working practices and uses appropriate protective devices and clothing; measure, test and inspect completed work to confirm adherence to specifications and/or suitability of completed work for intended use.
  • Observe mechanical devices and systems in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
  • Be able to read and interpret diagrams, manuals, schematics and work orders. Able to troubleshoot electrical circuits.
  • Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments, using hand tools and levels.
  • Perform 92-day, 368-day, and 1104-day inspections.
  • Take lube oil samples and cooling water samples.
  • Check journal box oil level, support bearing oil and traction motor gear grease levels and replenish as needed.
  • Check operation of low water and crankcase protectors.
  • Check air, fuel, oil, lube oil, water, and exhaust leaks; checks under main generator for oil and cleans as needed.
  • Perform air brake tests and test safety equipment.
  • Inspect cab weather-stripping and record condition; inspect cab equipment and list missing items; inspect engine room for signs of oil leakage, inspect fire extinguishers; inspect engine base bolts, dowel pins, bearing cap bolts, gear case and bolts; inspect turbo screen for cracks and plugging.
  • Check fuel tanks, brake shoes, riggings, trucks, steps, handrails, crossing chains, and crosswalks, hoses and clamps for defects, damage, and leaks according to Company specifications.
  • Inspect wheels according to wheel inspection reports and sign off on report.
  • Drain condensation from fuel tank sump, open all carbody, generator, and sump drains; drain box retention tanks.
  • Change air, engine, air compressor and fuel filters; change all main reservoir and dirt collector elements.
  • Remove and inspect traction motor support bearing wicks. Checks for water renews gaskets, adds support oil to full level
  • Torque crab and head nuts, basket bolts, exhaust stacks, and rocker arm nuts.
  • Time injectors and valves, sets racks, verifies pointers.
  • Check turbo, idler backlash and AR-10 bearings.
  • Clean, service, and repair handbrakes.
  • Change air brake valves and main reservoir according to specifications.
  • Perform main bearing checks according to company specifications.
  • Repair and install mechanical units, such as fuel and water pumps, control valves, governors, windshield wiper motor using mechanic’s hand tools.
  • Able to assist or perform electrical maintenance duties. Inspect high and low voltage systems.
  • Able to utilize computers (laptop, download device) to wo work on: PTC, locomotive cameras, locomotive event recorders

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, crane, hand and power tools.
  • Examine form and texture of parts to detect imperfections. Inspect used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements, using rulers, calipers, micrometers, height and depth gauges, protractors, scales and other measuring devices; discuss work to be performed with supervisors;
  • Set up and operate grinders and other metal work tools to make and repair parts.
  • Clean and service locomotive toilets. Stock, service, and clean locomotive cabs.
  • Perform modifications as required.
  • Wash locomotives using industrial power washer.
  • Move locomotives both in/out of the limits of the locomotive shop
  • Be able to operate overhead crane, truck cranes, forklifts, welding equipment and cutting tools as needed.
  • Be willing to preform all other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications and Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • One year of experience in diesel mechanics or locomotive repair/maintenance
  • Must meet Title 49 CFR 240 requirements for hearing and vision acuity.
  • Must be able to obtain locomotive mover/hostler certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Read and comprehend safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings, schematics and procedure manuals.
  • Must pass operating rules test and safety rules test.
  • Read, write, and communicate (speak, hear, and understand) in English.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling.
  • Perform work on uneven surfaces; frequently climb on/off equipment and walking on uneven surfaces safely.
  • Work in conditions with loud noise and fumes; work on/around heavy/moving machinery; bend, walk, stand, sit for extended periods of time; and use hand tools.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures; wear required personal protective equipment.

Preferred Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge and troubleshooting abilities for all mechanical and electrical locomotive systems, including air brakes, event recorders and PTC
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, length, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic shop math

Work Environment:

  • Indoors and outdoors on a regular basis in extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet)
  • Environment requires personal protective equipment
  • Work around heavy and moving machinery
  • Capable of working in a shop or field environment, climbing ladders, and walking on uneven surfaces safely
  • You may be subject to work weekends, holidays, and nights.
