Alternatives Overview

Our mission is to inspire young people to create a just future through practices that heal individuals, restore communities, and transform systems. Since 1971, Alternatives has modeled innovative alternatives to the status quo in Chicago's youth services field. Our school and community-based therapy, prevention and leadership development programs support young people to individually and collectively address causes of substance abuse, grief and trauma while building social-emotional, career and social change skills. In addition to working directly with young people, we train, coach and advocate for youth-serving institutions like Chicago Public Schools to be restorative and trauma-informed.


Position Overview

The Director of Restorative Justice provides administrative oversight in the implementation, maintenance, evaluation, and growth of Alternatives’ Restorative Justice services.


Responsibilities:

Perform the following from a racial, gender, sexuality, and ability equity lens:

  1. Plan, develop and administer program components consistent with agency policies and community needs.
  2. Prepare proposals and budgets for various grants and funding sources in support and enhancement of assigned areas; review and submit to the relevant internal and external stakeholders all monthly, quarterly, general and statistical reports as required for compliance with various grants.
  3. Recruit, hire, supervise, train, support, and evaluate, directly and indirectly, a multilevel staff and make recommendations on agency personnel practices and policies.
  4. Oversee compliance and quality assurance of Alternatives Restorative Justice contracts;
  5. Assist in the development of an expanded fee-for-service model for RJ training and coaching.
  6. Maintain knowledge current on agency’s theories and Chicago’s Restorative and Social Justice landscapes, methodologies and promising practices.
  7. Actively participate in all applicable staff and team meetings, professional development trainings and supervision meetings.
  8. Represent Alternatives at relevant forums and events as assigned.
  9. Participate in Alternatives’ fundraising initiatives.
  10. Other duties as assigned.




Requirements:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Human Services, Nonprofit Management, Youth Development, Social Work OR demonstrated experience in social services.
  2. 3 to 5 years’ experience in program planning for restorative justice and/or youth development implementation and at least 3 years of staff supervision and administrative experience.
  3. Demonstrated success evaluating services in institutional capacity-building, youth development and/or restorative justice, and successfully operationalizing innovative programs.
  4. Must possess a solid understanding of data collection and program evaluation.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and project management skills working with multifaceted and complex programs.
  6. Consistently learning and working within the following frameworks: Anti-oppression, Positive Youth Development, Trauma-informed and Balanced and Restorative Justice.
