Gateway Maryland is a health, impactful, and relevant nonprofit organization that focuses on education, hearing health, inclusion, language access, and speech & language. Our programs connect people to their worlds and aid individuals in their ability to understand and to be understood. All Gateway Maryland programs focus on prevention, intervention, treatment, or advocacy.

Gateway School, a program of Gateway Maryland, is a non-public school for students ages 5 – 15 with autism, developmental disabilities, and communication disorders. The 1:1 Instructional Assistant will work one-on-one with students with special needs, collect data to monitor progress, prepare materials, and implement behavior intervention plans.

This position will work approximately 35 hours per week; Monday - Friday 8:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Experience in a school setting required

Position Summary

The 1:1 Aide/Instructional Assistant (1:1 Aide/IA) provides behavioral, academic, communication, and functional support to students throughout the school day as determined by the individualized education plan (IEP). A 1:1 Aide/IA implements behavioral interventions as outlined in a behavior intervention plan (BIP). Licensed teachers, behavior specialists, and therapists supervise the implementation of behavioral, academic, communication and functional supports implemented by the 1:1 Aide/IA. 1:1 Aides/IAs are expected to track student behavior and academic data daily as directed by the licensed professionals. This position supports the teacher and classroom throughout the daily operations of the school day.

Education and/or Experience

  • 1-2 years of experience in a related field working with children, specifically those with special communication needs. Preferably in a school setting.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and seek out support if needed.
  • Ability to provide a good verbal speech and language model.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proven endeavors toward professional growth and learning.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Suite and or Google Suite
  • Physical ability to perform essential functions of this job successfully (requires to stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, move quickly, live or move more than 50 lbs.)
