Reports To: Manager of Psychometrics and Research

Location: Dallas, Texas – ABOG National Center; Hybrid Work environment with expectation for 60% in office.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary: The Junior Data Scientist supports the Psychometrics and Research team within the Office of Medical Standards and Assessments in data analysis around assessments and research. They are responsible for working collaboratively with ABOG staff to implement any assigned data analysis and reporting (via tables, graphs, and figures) under the guidance of the Data Scientist and the Manager of Psychometrics and Research, including analysis of data for patterns and trends. In addition, they would be responsible for assisting in the creation of documentation around processes and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Process and/or extract any data using SQL extracts for analysis around assessments and/or research, working collaboratively with the IT department if needed.
  • Perform data cleaning, formatting, and data-checking operations to prepare it for analysis and modeling.
  • Aggregate, clean, integrate, and perform exploratory data analysis from multiple data sources to identify trends, patterns, associations, differences, and anomalies under the guidance of the Data Scientist and the Manager of Psychometrics and Research.
  • Prepare data files for internal and external stakeholders, as required, in appropriate formats.
  • Implement data analysis and data reporting (tables, graphs, figures) using descriptive and inferential statistics with interpretations/use under the guidance of the Data Scientist and the Manager of Psychometrics and Research.
  • Create clear and informative data visualizations to communicate findings and insights to stakeholders.
  • Assist in creating documentation around procedures for assessments and research (exam technical reports, tables/graphs, spreadsheets, presentation slide decks, manuscripts, etc.) to ensure reproducibility and knowledge sharing.
  • Be able to communicate findings verbally and present findings, if needed.
  • Create, maintain, and adapt code files used for data extraction, cleaning, analysis cyclically.
  • Assist the Psychometrics and Research team of the Office of Medical Standards and Assessments in improving processes, improving code, investigating root cause issues, designing solutions for high priority issues, and developing efficiencies.
  • Stay updated on emerging trends and technologies in data science and machine learning, and contribute to research initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with all ABOG departments to understand project requirements and deliver solutions for the department.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership.

Skills and Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in Statistics, Educational Measurement, Quantitative Psychology, Mathematics, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Strong understanding of concepts and methodologies around data management, descriptive and inferential statistics, and research design required.
  • Understanding of basic psychometrics (test/item statistics, Classical Test Theory, scoring of tests) preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience (or relevant coursework/internships) in data analysis, statistical modeling, and machine learning.
  • Must be proficient in SQL and Microsoft 365.
  • Advanced proficiency specifically with Microsoft Excel (e.g., conditional logic, VLOOKUP, counting, summing, pivot tables, etc.)
  • Proficiency in R required. Proficiency in RMarkdown, R Shiny, shinyapps.io is a plus.
  • Candidate must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and be able to work flexibly and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Strong technical documentation writing skills required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
