SUMMARY:
We are seeking an Activity specialist for our after-school program located at PS/MS 183 in Broad Channel, NY. The Activity Specialist is responsible for implementing and leading engaging activities for middle school children in the after-school program. The Activity Specialist would enrich the experiences of children in our program and help them stay engaged.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching students how to play and enjoy a variety of digital and non-digital games, while also integrating games into the curriculum to enhance learning and engagement. The ideal candidate will have experience in teaching, a strong understanding of game design, and a passion for helping students succeed.

Monday to Thursday - 11:30am to 4:00pm

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop lesson plans that incorporate games into the curriculum to enhance learning and engagement
  • Teach students how to play and enjoy a variety of digital and non-digital games
  • Encourage teamwork, collaboration, and communication among students
  • Create a safe and inclusive environment for all students
  • Assess student progress and provide feedback on their game play and strategy
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends and developments in game design and technology
  • Provide after-school game clubs and organize game tournaments and events
  • Collaborate with other teachers and faculty members to integrate games into cross-curricular activities
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and attendance
  • Ensure the safety of children
  • Able to engage all children in assigned activities, so that no child is left behind
  • Develop weekly activity lesson plans in area(s) of specialty
  • Ready and prepared to facilitate purposeful activities that foster the development of new skills in children, while reinforcing skills/information previously taught
  • Assist in all program activities, which could include supervising children, facilitating dismissal, attending field trips that might be outside of regular hours, hosting special events and other program activities
  • Works closely with the Group Leader, engaging them in the lesson plan development
  • Attend all meetings, training workshops and special events, which might be after regular hours
  • Complete 15 hours of professional development each calendar year
  • Conduct self as a positive role model
  • Knowledge of DYCD and DOH mandates

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in teaching and working with students of various ages
  • Passion for games and an understanding of game design principles
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers and faculty members
  • Creative problem solver with strong organizational skills
  • Knowledge of the latest trends and developments in game design and technology
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including after-school clubs and events
  • Appropriate training or certification in their area of specialty; college students welcome; college degree preferred
  • Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Competency in youth development and child care
  • Ability to create interactive academic and/or enrichment activities that are age-appropriate
  • Genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice
  • Ability to work as part of a team within a school community
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with other employees
  • Reliable and cooperative

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • College degree preferred, college students welcome
  • Minimum of two years experience working with middle-school-age children

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $20.00/hour

Drug Testing:

Staff members are subject to random drug testing throughout the school year.
