Responsibilities and Duties The work of a Direct Support Professional is directed by a plan of care developed by the Oregon Department of Human Services. The Direct Support Professional does not organize the care plan but is responsive to it in providing care and supports to the client.

Position Expectations (may include, but are not limited to the following:)

• Skill development and support as defined in the Individual Support Plan (ISP) and the Client Action Plan. Each DSP will be trained in their individual client’s needs and expectations.

o Based on client needs, may include cooking, cleaning, medication assistance and reminders, scheduling, attending medical appointments, personal care and hygiene, budgeting, housing, transportation, etc.

• Documentation of progress notes at the end of each shift (State requirement)

• Documentation of monthly progress reports (State requirement)

• Completion of 24 hours of continuing education per year (State requirement)

• Six (6) hours of pre-support training, which includes: (State requirement)

o First Aid / CPR

o Timekeeping and Documentation Software

o Mandatory Abuse Training – Children and Adults (State required)

o Policies and Procedures

o Emergency Plan Development, Practice and Documentation

o Once assigned to a client:

 ISP training, Protocols and Client Action Plans

Qualifications and Education Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Preferred Skills

• Experience providing general care and supports

• Knowledge of home care services and supports

• Proficient in written and oral communication

• Overall competency in working under pressure

General Staff Qualifications: A staff member delivering services to an individual must meet the following criteria:

• Be at least 18 years of age

• Be legally eligible to work in the United States demonstrated by:

o A completed US Citizenship and Immigration Services Form I-9, or

o Other documents that prove legal ability to work in the United States, or

o A notarized letter from the Executive Director or board of directors acknowledging the agency understands the responsibility to maintain I-9s for all employees and attesting the agency has a completed I-9 for each employee

• Hold a current, valid and unrestricted professional license or certificate where services and supervision require specific professional education, training and skill

• Understand requirements of maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding individual information

• Not be on the list of excluded or disbarred providers maintained by the Office of the Inspector General of the State of Oregon

• Be literate and capable of understanding and following both written and oral orders

• Be able to communicate with individuals, health care providers, case managers and others as appropriate

• Be certified in CPR / First Aid prior to working with clients (pre-support training will be available)

• Receive 24 hours of job-related in-service training annually

• Receive training on support documents, when a support document is present, for every individual the staff member will support. This training must occur before working unsupervised with an individual who has a support document. A staff member is supervised only when a person who has received training on the support document is in the same building or within line of sight and hearing of the untrained staff member

• Have clear job responsibilities as described in a current, signed and dated job description

• If transporting individuals, have a valid driver’s license in compliance with the laws of the Department of Motor Vehicles

o This includes having appropriate vehicle liability insurance, and verification that the staff’s insurance company covers driving individuals for work purposes

• Additional qualifications required by applicable program rules for the staff of an agency engaging in the delivery of the program service.

Additional requirements and Acknowledgement:

All applicants are required to provide three employment references with current contact information available.

Additional requirements may be added by the State or the agency after this job description is signed. Updates will be sent to all current staff for review and signatures to maintain compliance with State laws and Administrative Rules.

These requirements apply to ALL DSPs, even those who are parents, family members or friends of the client.
